Before it's said, many Flashes fans including myself, believe Kent State should have overcome these awful calls to win last Saturday. Our three turnovers, for example, had nothing to do with officiating. Miami made clutch plays to get the win and deserves credit.

Before it's said (duo), Dave Carducci is a first rate writer. He has been and will be critical of the Flashes when warrented. But for you Akron fans who questioned his last colummn, this one is published. He has the guts to put his name on the line.

To lose a one touchdown game with a touchdown called back, (which was called good by both officials in the end zone and photos showing Tukes was in) and get an awful holding call on 1- 10 on the Miami 11 with 3:00 left is just hard to swallow. I'm glad he's speaking out.

We will probably not get any more apologies for poor officiating as after the Akron game and don't want them. We want the MAC officiials to get it right.
Seems like the MAC crews have been under fire this year. This game is just one example.
As a Miami fan I definetly thought the holdiing penalty was bogus. Watching the game I thought they were going to overturn the TD, but I admit it was close. I didn't realize the Kokal face mask wasn't one until this article

Kent did win a replay on Saturday- when Armond Robinson long pass catch and subsequent fumble was reviewed. The officials called it a fumble and review confirmed it- although I thought his knee might have been done- you couldn't tell for sure on the replay.

My biggest problem with MAC officials is how many "out of bounds" 15 yard penalties they call. They don't understand the game and what is a late hit and what isn't. It really depends on what sideline they are on.

I agree. They seem to call Toledo for a late hit out of bounds about 3 or 4 times a game. What are these officials thinking???

Replay showing what was called on the field wasn't exactly "winning" the call any more than "losing" the call on the Jarvis fumble, which was a fumble (by a hair) and good call as the replay showed. As for the TD pass overturned, the 2 refs right there called it a good catch, only to go to video replay and have it overturned was ridiculous. They did not have but those same 2 lame replays, how on earth can you 100% overturn a call on the field with those views? That call was the difference in the game, and I'm not even talking about some of those calls on the last drive, the false start on the center, the facemasking by Carter and the NG from Miami right on the center and QB as the ball was being snapped and no call. I can't stand excuses, I can't stand blaming refs, but week after week it's the same thing and crucial calls are costing teams Ws, so something needs to be done! And if they're paying alot of $$$ for the replay system, AND the game is televised, they need to have more cameras out there to give the replay booth proper angles.
The MAC officals have been dreadful this year. The calls they were making in the Temple/NIU game last week were boarderline criminal.

There was an drive killing interception by Temple that was ruled a completion for NIU both on the field and in the replay booth and it was the most obvious interception that I have ever seen. There was also a phantom holding call on a 72 yard reception by Bruce Francis where the ref threw a flag at the end of the play when everybody was already half way down field.

The UConn game was one thing but at least they issued an apology. I don't see it happening this time because Temple won but man was it pitiful.

You're officially in the conference now. Welcome.
The Temple-NIU game was the worst officiated game I ever saw in my life. Both teams got jobbed on bad calls, though in all honesty it looked like Temple got jobbed a lot more. Pushing somebody out of bounds was called as a 'late hit'! Obvious interception possession ruled wrong way. Poor line judge calls several times. DREADFUL, DREADFUL. On week one somebody said of the officiating "Welcome to the MAC". How do you tolerate it?
What choice do we have?

Toledo was hosed in last weeks game that put points on the board for the opposition too.

Officiating has been sickening at all the MAC-officiated Toledo contests this season.

And those bad calls and no calls go both ways. Our opponents have been equally jobbed.
What amazes me is there does not seem to be any leadership amongst the officiating crew, and rarely any discussion about a flag. I don't know where they get these guys, but they need some intensive training in calling D-1 football. As has been commented the out of bounds personal foul calls are horrendous. Drive killers of the first order. Most of the time they throw the flag very late, and very often for nothing more than the defensive players momentum causing him to roll into or over the runner.

My understanding of the call is that if a player makes a deliberate play out of bounds, that is a penalty. But making a play while in bounds against another player that is continued out of bounds due to momentum that is a no call.

What the commissioner should do is hire an experienced NFL ref and other qualified officials; preferably retired, and have them run a full week seminar in the summer with actual tape from games demonstrating the various penalties and fouls. All of the MAC refs would be required to attend. Then as a follow up during the season the MAC crews would also get a 1/2 day training session the day before a game so as to have the situations fresh in their minds. Specific improper calls from the prior week's games would be reviewed and instruction would be given. Poor officiating is poor work performance. The only way to improve is through training. What I have seen so far this year sucks big time.
The thing that bugs me the most is the arrogance of the league office. In Dave's column, he reports that the MAC office is outraged that Martin even ASKS them to review film of disputed calls. A quality conference would proactively ask to see the film so they can learn. Instead, the MAC doesn't want to know.

We could all start an e mail campaign to the MAC office. The coaches can't do it. Maybe the fans should.
