Rock,

As you know Holt has been on a tear this year in MI Class A football. Over the weekend Holt's fine OL Austin Holtz gave his verbal to Ball St. At one point I suspect Austin's father was posting on this board and his comments about EMU were not favorable. We should not be losing Michigan kids to Ball St. especially Lansing area ones.

Michigan has always been EMU's recruiting base which has been good, but this year MSU and Cincy as I've pointed out are cleaning up and Ball St is making inroads as well.

What would have more of an impact on recruiting is us winning MAC games the rest of the year and improving even more on our record and I mean beating CMU and WMU and Ohio. A five or six win season would do wonders for recruiting.

You are absolutely right, Cowboy.

Probably most high school kids didn't know that Eastern played a very nice game against UofM.

My guess is that they, like a lot of posters here (I predicted a 21 point UofM win - others had rout margins), didn't think the game would be competitive and probably didn't even watch the game.

The only way EMU makes a statement is if they are in contention come November 1.

Beating NIU and Howard isn't going to start any recruiting tidalwaves or any stampede to the Rynearson turnstiles.

P.S. I remember an e-mail from Dennis re: hoops. The gist - we've won two of our last three games - where are the fans?

Winning two hoop games (against bad teams) or beating NIU and Howard in FB isn't going to set the campus abuzz.

The critical threshold is probably a winning conference record. Then SOME students might take notice.

Students and most casual alums and friends know the difference between the '96 - '98 EMU hoops teams and those since.

When EMU FB gets near the TOP HALF of DI-A (say around 70, 65 or higher) or top 100 in hoops, EVERYONE who follows college sports in MI will take notice. Moving from 130 in the Sagarin FB to 100 isn't going to do much.

Two observations:

1). Kids want to play for championships and BSU is considered a rising MAC program.

2). The BSU HC has a ton of connections in MI (having been a very good recruiter at UofM).

As you and Dennis know, there are coaches all over the MAC (in FB and hoops) who have VERY deep roots in Michigan.

As many know, LaMonte Stone is an asst coach at BG. He has excellent MI roots. Stan Joplin is a former MSU assistant coach. These are examples of Ohio coaches sitting just south of the MI-Ohio border with deep MI roots.

The MI-Ohio border doesn't mean much to kids (this is more true in BT FB where UofM mines Ohio every year).

Although they've improved, EMU needs to win more battles for the better recruits in MI. At the same time I think they need to win a few recruiting battles in OH, which generally has more D1 FB recruits.
There is more then just the success, or failure, of the football team that determines the selection of a school for a prospect.

Maizbl, you are correct! Unfortunatly, we working class EMU alums don't always have the resources for those $100 handshakes that some of the "better" schools like to use as a recruiting tool.
Well, lets see in recent weeks we lost Holtz an OL to Ball St, a sleeper DB from Trotwood Ohio Norm Young with blazing speed to Bowling Green and we are likely to lose another good Ohio DB Kenny Veal to W. Virginia. Oh yes, Holt's huge middle LB Zajac verballed to Western Michigan. What was interesting about that was many MAC teams were "interested" but not offering and WMU made the first offer. Just for the record Holtz had offers from Ball St., Buffalo and us. We never officially offered Zajac, he's huge at 245, but doesn't fit into our system of smaller but very quick LBs.

Hopefully we'll break out of this slump and get some more verbals.

There is a definite TIME LAG between success on the field and recruiting results.

As I rejoined to Dennis, beating a bad NIU team, a very bad Howard team and a spirited game against a UofM team this year which has Hart, but not much heart, isn't going to get 17 year old kids into "Green Mania."

I agree with you, Cowboy, that if EMU is contending this year or next come November 1, then recruits might become more interested.

Kids know when the PROGRAM is on the upswing. Not just a 'good' September or October or whatever.
