Full Version: Ranking the teams after week 5

The picture of the how teams should be ranked in the conference remains very clouded. This is all a guess anyways, so here is how I see it after 5 weeks.

1) Bowling Green (3-1) remains on top after a decisive win over WKU. The Falcons led 17-0 at half and never looked back.
2) Ball State (3-2) remains as number two after running over Buffalo. Ball State's offensive looks impressive and will be tough for anyone to stop.
3) Kent State(3-2) The Flashes have looked strong at points and they did manage to beat a talented Ohio team this weekend.
4) Akron (2-3) The Zips slide one spot after getting an embarrassing loss at UConn. The Zips have been solid for four games. Next week should let me know if this was a fluke game or if injuries have finally got up with our team.
5) WMU (2-3) Back to Back wins and another big offensive output. Western is turning things around after a slow start to the season.
6) Ohio(2-3)With the unbalanced schedule, an loss in your division really hurts. Ohio does look like they are lacking a dominate defense. I still think OU will be a team in the mix for the East when it is all said and done.
7) Miami(2-3)Miami confuses me at this point. They have wins over BSU and Syracuse which are as impressive as anyones wins at this point. They have suffered two crushing defeats to UC (cincinnati) and UC (colorado). Since no one else on their schedule plays with the intials UC, I think Miami is capable of winning the East. I am real interested to see how they do next week.
8) CMU (2-3) The defending MAC Champs are 2-0 in conference action with another convincing win over NIU.
9) EMU(2-3) A bad loss to Vandy this week, but I am still convinced EMU is going to make some noise in the West this year.
10) UB (1-4) They were completely outplayed by Ball State. BSU is possibly the best team in the conference, but 35 point losses to in conference schools still hurt.
11) NIU (1-4) NIU is definitely down this year. Many of the NIU faithful felt that they team was not going to see a big drop off from their graduation last season. NIU is just not as good and are now 0-2 in conference.
12) UT(1-4) This would be the year to play Toledo in a crossover game. You know Amstutz will get this turned around soon so play them now.
13) Temple(0-5) how did you guy outplay UConn. Akron made them look like a top 25 team. Temple plays Navy strong but loses to Army? Temple will surprise one or two teams this season. Despite being 0-5 they are showing some glimpses.
I don't disagree with anything there. I still think Testicle Tech is the best team in the conference though. Time will tell. At least there's one competent team in each division. At this point, anything other than BSU and BGSU in Detroit would be disappointing.
Next Saturday Western puts a hurt on Akron that will make last years beating seem mild. Might as well move the Zipper down now and save yourself the trouble next week.

BG fans are getting a premature hard-on. Watch Miami win the East, with Kent runner up. BG a distant 3rd.

If UT doesn't get Opelt or Cochrane back they'll finish below Temple. NIU at the moment is probably the worst team in the league.

Okay, my zipper's down, go ahead and lick-a-Chip!
Two phallic references in one post. Very classy.

I don't disagree though if WMU gets wins over Akron and NIU in the next two weeks then that game with Ball State is going to be at Waldo, and I would like the Broncos chances.

BG is very good and should win the East. UT will rebound somewhat and still get 4 wins this year if they have a healthy QB. They play Liberty, EMU, and NIU at home still.

We are very happy with our progress from a disappointing 2006, but if you look closely most Falcon fans are treading very carefully. The majority of the pro-BG comments (i.e. top ranking, bowl talk etc.) are being made by other school's fans. . . .

It is a long season, we are starting to get dinged up, have already had our bye week, and head to Boston College this week who likely will be ranked in the Top Ten. . . .

Forward Falcons!
Too early to anoint anyone champs, but clearly BGSU is the top. Ball State is solid #2. Beyond that, I think you can't go wrong with zipsfan's ratings.

Even as a Miami fan, I could easily swap Miami and CMU. Miami is definitely the confusing team this year. Personally, I see them as total middle of the pack.

The Syracuse win was desperately needed but really not all that impressive. Miami was up 14-0, and only scored 3 points the rest of the game. I'll take it, but hard to tell if that starts building momentum again.

The Ball State win could be looked at as suspect due to some odd coaching decisions on their side. Of course, Miami played well enough to put themselves in position to take advantage of that. So who knows.

WMU and Kent scare me a bit. I'd be watching the rear view mirror if I was either of the top 2 now.

NIU - welcome to the year of the slide. Miami's been keeping the seat warm, but would be happy to pass it on (I hope).

OK, let's not get carried away here. Ahem, Toledo. Ahem, Temple. Ahem, Buffalo.

As incompetent as we have been, I don't see how you can put us below those teams.

Dominant, man. Dominant.

What he said. Praises of the Falcons are largely being sung by other schools' fans. We're pleased so far, but we aren't weauxfing.
NIU and Toledo have nothing to play for now. Both of our seasons are over with.

I'm not even sure NIU can beat Temple even though they are 0-5. This team makes way too many mistakes and has way too many injuries. Maybe losing to Temple like BGSU did last season will help NIU turn it around the next season.
Right now I'm just enjoying the ride...the team is so much fun to watch right now. the defense is bigger and faster than past years. The offense is stocked with some really talented kids...that Willie Geter is going to be a star in the MAC, the kid was an all state LB in Florida at 170lbs..you know he is tough and hella strong to do that....he bounces off tacklers like a little pinball. I'd call him "Pinball Wizard" but I think Who references are likely lost on kids today

In the end, I do anticipate being able to do a certain amount of gloating a the Brandon detractors over on azz.com though....

Just as well. If you had, CE would undoubtedly have commented on his "subtle wrist." 03-shhhh
#1 Ball State - That offense is scary good, and their defense seemed to improve against UB this week. Nate Davis is going to make some national headlines before his collegiate career is over.

#2 BGSU - IMO, the jury is still somewhat out on us. We played well against Minnesota and Sparty, but I've noticed a little bit of a drop off in terms of focus and intensity the past two games, especially on defense. This week at BC will be a good gauge for us to see where we are before we head into the bulk of our MAC schedule.

#3 Kent State - Here by default, only because they beat an Ohio team pretty convincingly. Jarvis is a force to reckon with, but I'm not sure if Edelman can produce consistently if Jarvis is unable to get his usually yardage. Only time will tell.

#4 WMU - The Broncos seemed to have found their offense, albeit against a much maligned Toledo defensive corps. They have to be considered one of the frontrunners for the MAC West crown, and I think their game with Ball State will be for all the marbles.

#5 Ohio - Crushing loss to Kent. The Bobcats played pretty well last week against Wyoming before surrendering to a 1-point loss, only to come out somewhat uninspired this week against Kent State. Solich has got a lot of work to do if he wants to compete for the MAC East crown, but the offense has got to improve.

#6 Akron - The Zips were pretty much that Saturday against UConn. The Huskies were are in no way a powerhouse, but the final in this one sure suggested it. Akron's sitting pretty though in the East at 1-0, but a 44-10 loss to a not so great Big East team isn't going to help confidence.

#7 Miami - The team who wears a bag over their head and hides their identity. Which team will show up from week to week? Their win against Ball State is looking mighty impressive at this point, and a win against Syracuse is still a win against a BCS opponent. The Redhawks need to find some consistency though if they play to compete for the East title.

#8 CMU - 2-0 in the MAC has to count for something. Wins against arguably the two worst teams in the MAC have put CMU in the driver's seat. Matchups with Ball State and WMU down the road will be the litmus test for the Chips if they want to get back to Detroit this year.

#9 EMU - The Eagles have shown some improvement this season in a few areas, but overall things still look difficult for a program that hasn't quite put it all together. Jeff Genyk has done a good job though at maximizing his players' talents and effort. A win against NIU helps their cause a bit.

#10 UT - The Rockets were lit up again on the scoreboard for 40+ points and haven't shown many signs of improvement. A gift win against Iowa State gives them a slight nod vs. everyone else at the bottom, but not by much. An 0-2 conference start has dispelled any West title hopes.

#11 UB - The Bulls looked good against Temple and then gave Penn State a solid half of football, and then the wheels just fell off again. Ball State wiped the floor with them Saturday, and I don't see the Bulls winning another conference game outside of possibly Toledo.

#12 NIU - How sad for a once MAC powerhouse to be relegated this low after 5 games. The Huskies just aren't very good this year, and the loss to SIU sticks out like a sore thumb. Plus, they also lost Jones to Cincy...what a bad week for NIU.

#13 Temple - Many felt they could beat Army Saturday, but Army rattled off 16 straight points to cruise to a 37-21 win after a 21-21 deadlock at half. Temple may not win a game all season, but the talent has shown it's face a few times this year, it just needs to be harnessed.

I agree with JP. I would have Ball State ahead of us at this time as well.

And I hope to be able to join El Grande Flipperrooo in some gloating to the Brandon haters.

+1

Our three wins are great, but not impressive if you dig deeper ...

Minny - One win and that couldn't have been much closer
Temple - Showing glimpses, but still 0-5
WKU - Transitioning to I-A

So, like Flip said, we're enjoying it, but I'd wager that the majority of the Falcon faithful are tempering their enthusiasm.
