Full Version: Just found these harsh words from Golden

From a Web site that I prefer not to mention. ;-)

Quote:The other fumble was committed by junior speedster Travis Shelton on a first-half kickoff return. The Falcons scored on the next play to take a 21-7 lead.

"That one was ridiculous," Golden said. "I don't know what Travis was doing on that play. He made bad decisions a couple of times today, and I need to evaluate where he's at as a returner. He's trying to do things outside what the system is."

Hurts to see a kid called out like that and I say that because we've seen that from our coach in recent years. But Golden gave himself some harsh criticism, too.

Quote:Five minutes later, Owls quarterback Adam DiMichele lost the ball when he was sacked in the end zone. Bowling Green freshman Orlando Barrow pounced on it, and the Falcons (2-1, 1-0 MAC) were ahead by two scores.

"It was a terrible call," Golden said of his decision to have DiMichele drop back into the end zone on the play. "That's my fault. That was a terrible decision."

The guy is learning the hard way, just like his young team.
I had some similar quotes from Golden after the BG game but didn't go with them because I thought they were a little harsh. Maybe I'm wrong, but I try to stay away too much from being unduly harsh on the players...these are still student/athletes after all.

Although --- here is a sample of really going off on a player and a You Tube response from the coach and Dennis Dodd's defense of the writer... thoughts?

Here is the FWAA's response:
Last Saturday, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy used his post-game news conference as a platform to criticize an FWAA member for a story written about a player in his program.

The following is a statement from FWAA president Mike Griffith of the Knoxville News Sentinel after a review of the press conference comments and the story written in The Oklahoman by Jenni Carlson:

"I consider Coach Gundy's behavior completely inappropriate. It shows a lack of respect for the media and doesn't speak well for the university and the fans that he represents. Coach Gundy's actions have brought national attention and further scrutiny to the situation that could have been handled in a more private and appropriate matter."

I probably should have started a new thread on this.
They should both be ashamed.

The writer was over the line, even for a column. She got way more personal than she needed and relied mostly on supposition for the rest of her piece. It belonged on the pages of a cheesy tabloid instead of a newspaper.

The coach was a complete jerk and should have handled the situation like a professional instead of a petulant child. He should have had a private meeting with the editor or publisher of the paper. I doubt they could have defended her column. Instead all he did was limit his recourse and look like a bully in front of the rest of the media.

They both need to be reprimanded.

That was my take as well. Both behaved badly.
Athletically, there isn't a more talented player on the Temple roster, it's just a shame he's got a case of "bad brains" when it comes to making smart plays. If he could cut the mental lapses out of his game I could see Shelton competing for MAC player of the year next year.
