Quote:DeKALB, Ill. - After posting a school-record five sacks Saturday at Idaho, Northern Illinois defensive end Larry English (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) has been named the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week. The junior defensive end also scored his first career touchdown in the game after forcing a fumble and recovering it in the endzone.
English broke his own school record with five sacks against the Vandals while also being credited with five quarterback pressures in Saturday's 42-35 NIU victory. In the game, he totaled a career-best 12 tackles, including 10 solo stops, and added a forced fumble, fumble recovery and pass break up.
With four minutes remaining in the first half, English sacked Idaho quarterback Nathan Enderle at the 10-yard line and forced a fumble that he recovered in the endzone for a touchdown that put the Huskies ahead 35-7. In the game, English recorded a sack in every quarter and had two in the second stanza.
English's five sacks is the NCAA's best single-game total this season and vaulted him to the top of the MAC rankings with an average of 1.50 per game (six total), a mark that ranks in a second-place tie nationally. English has 19 career sacks, a total that ties him for third on NIU's all-time list.
