QUICK...............NAME FOUR of the nine quarterbacks who will be starting this year in the W.A.C.......NO PEEKING NOW!!

Can't do it can ya?? Here ya go.....here's a rundown of who will (likely) be starting at QB at all of the Western Athletic Conference schools this fall:

1. Jared Zabransky - Boise State - Junior - Passed for 2,927 yards last season with a 63 % pass completion percentage and a QB efficiency rating of 147.

2. Paul Pinegar - Fresno State - Senior - Passed for 2,099 yards last season with a 59 % pass completion percentage and a QB efficiency rating of 135.

3. Jeff Rowe - Nevada - Junior - Passed for 2,633 yards last season with a 58 % pass completion percentage and a QB efficiency rating of 121.

4. Matt Kubik - Louisiana Tech - Senior - Passed for 1,818 yards last season with a 51 % pass completion percentage and a QB efficiency rating of 119.

5. Michael Harrington - Idaho - Senior - Passed for 2,222 yards last season with a 66 % pass completion percentage and a QB efficiency rating of 125.

6. Adam Tafralis - San Jose State - Sophomore - Passed for 432 yards last season with a 45 % pass completion percentage and a QB efficiency rating of 107.

7. Leon Jackson III - Utah State - Sophomore - Passed for 404 yards last season with a 56 % pass completion percentage and a QB efficiency rating of 133..........OR Utah State MAY go with Eric Sobolewski a J.C. transfer (Sophomore).

8. Joey Vincent - New Mexico State - Junior - Passed for 139 yards last season with a 36 % pass completion percentage and a QB efficiency rating of 143................OR New Mexico State MAY go with Royal Gill, a J.C. transfer (Junior) who passed last season for 1,963 yards with 17 TD's vs. only ONE interception for his Junior College team. Gill had slightly better stats than Vincent did in the New Mexico State spring game.

9. Tyler Graunke - Hawai'i - RS Freshman - He redshirted last season so he has no stats available.........OR Hawai'i may go with fifth year Senior, Jeffrey Rhode (younger brother of former Boise State quarterback B.J. Rhode). Rhode threw only one pass last season and it was incomplete.
Hawaii's QB position is WIDE-OPEN. Along with the QBs you mentioned, Colt Brennan will also be arriving in fall camp as a walk-on. Its still wide-open after the spring practices with no QB seperating himself from the rest. We also have Jack Rolovich, younger brother of Nick, who helped hammer BYU in '01. And Akina who is coming in after a 2-year mormon mission. Both are unlikely to start because they were not invited to fall camp and unable to join the team until 1 week before the first game (when the 105 player roster limit is lifted).

The battle is probably between Rhode, Graunke, and Brennan. So are we the only team not returning a starting QB?

It's pretty much of a two person race as far as I can tell. I think it's pretty telling that Rolovich and Akina both were NOT INVITED to participate in fall camp. Don't think you'll be seeing either one of them starting next season when they will be missing all of fall camp. And I also seriously doubt that a walk-on is going to come in and win the starting job either. Looks to me like it will be either Graunke or Rhode. 04-cheers 04-cheers

No, Hawai'i is not the only team that does not have a starting QB returning. Utah State, New Mexico State and San Jose State also do not have a returning starter coming back at QB.
Eh, you never know :D

Since both QBs seemed equal in spring, Brennan can come in the fall and seperate himself from the two.

And for those who may not know anything about Brennan heres an article.

Quote:Junior college QB to walk on at Hawai'i

By Stephen Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer

Colt Brennan, a highly regarded quarterback with a controversial background, will accept an invitation to join the University of Hawai'i football team as a non-scholarship player for the coming season.

Brennan, who is attending Saddleback Community College in Mission Viejo, Calif., is scheduled to earn an associate degree in May, the last remaining hurdle to meeting the NCAA requirements for an incoming transfer.

He then will move to Hawai'i, where he will have three years to play two seasons.

"I'm grateful for the second chance," Brennan said. "I know I'm starting at the bottom, but I'm willing to work my way up, to show the community the type of person I am, that I won't ever be a problem."

The NCAA prohibits UH coaches and officials from commenting on walk-on players who are not enrolled in the Manoa campus.

But Brennan has earned national attention for serving a seven-day sentence after being found guilty of first-degree criminal trespass and second-degree burglary for a January 2004 incident that occurred when he was a freshman at the University of Colorado. He was accused of drunkenly entering a woman's dormitory room.

A Boulder, Colo., jury convicted Brennan last September. But during sentencing in January, Boulder District Judge Diane MacDonald threw out all convictions except trespassing (entering the room) and burglary (not leaving immediately).

"I was drunk, and I was wrong," he told The Advertiser. "I probably wasn't being a gentleman, and I made a mistake. No one should ever be disrespected that way. ... I was wrong in getting drunk and going into her room. I'm very, very sorry for that. What I did (that night) was morally wrong."

McDonald reduced Brennan's sentence to seven days in the Boulder County Jail. He served two days last month and the remainder of the sentence last week.

Under terms of his four-year probation, Brennan has to meet with a therapist, work 60 hours of community service over a four-year period, and write a letter of apology to be published in three Colorado newspapers.

The victim, who sought an apology but not more jail time, told the Colorado Daily Camera: "I hope he can use this as a vehicle to become a better person."

Colorado dismissed Brennan from the team last year after launching an investigation into the incident.

Last fall, he enrolled at Saddleback, where he completed 177 passes in 259 attempts (with four interceptions) for 2,532 yards and 23 touchdowns in nine games. Brennan, who is 6 feet 3 and 200 pounds, was named to the Mission Conference first team and selected jucaltransfer.com's offensive MVP.

In January, Syracuse and Hawai'i withdrew scholarship offers. But after the convictions were reduced, the UH coaches told Brennan he would be allowed to enter UH as a non-scholarship player. He will be reunited with former Mater Dei High classmate Julien Petit, a UH receiver.

"The past year, he's been through a lot," Petit said of Brennan's situation. "That isn't his character. That's why it was tough. He's a great guy, and he's got integrity."

UH coach June Jones has had a history of offering second chances. In 1999, he offered a scholarship to San Diego linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa, who served time in a juvenile detention center after being found guilty of felony assault. Tinoisamoa played three seasons for UH without any off-field problems, and now is a starter for the St. Louis Rams as a safety after being moved from linebacker.

This year, receiver Davone Bess, who had served 15 months at a juvenile detention camp after being found guilty as an accessory to a burglary, received a football scholarship from UH. Bess is taking classes at UH this semester.

"Hawai'i is good about giving people second chances," Brennan said. "I made a mistake, and I want to make up for it."

I guess Hawaii is shaping up to become 2nd-Chance U.
Boy, you go to jail if you get drunk and walk into a woman's room by mistake in Colorado??? Jeez, I'd have been in jail a LOT when I was much younger then if I had lived in Colorado. 04-drinky

It also strikes me odd that this kid was facing possible jail time for what appears to me to be an incredibly MINOR offense, yet the University of Colorado has become infamous for it's poor treatment of women and offenses that were FAR worse than what this kid did. 03-confused
After all he (apparently) did not RAPE anyone or even assault anyone, he just went into a room where he was not welcome when he was intoxicated. Big whoop!! 04-drinky

You may be right about him contending for the starting job then after all (judging by his success at the JC level). I say good luck to him. :bluethumb:
I think Idaho will probably sack Harrinton for the JC transfer. What do you think Vandal fans????

I believe Rowe is a Junior this year.
Yep, you're right. My mistake. 04-bow
broncobob,
I think that the competition will be open through fall camp, but Harrington will get the nod because of his knowledge of the offense. Just in case though, Wichman will be a good alternative if we need him.
The wac should have about 3 or 4 outstanding qb's this year! The pass happy wac suits nevada's chris ault just fine! Rowe will be in his third year at nevada and two under ault. This could be a coming out for him. Don't be suprised if he has a monster passing season. We should be over 500 this season with a lot of hi-scoring games! Should be great.
I know hawaii and boise are going to be pass crazy also. I have heard that nmsu will be throwing 95% also. I think fresno is to the point where they play a smashmouth type of game! they want to dominate physically! donna about san jose idaho and usu
