Quote:Police investigate downtown gang-related fight
By ALAN EDRINN

Police are investigating a gang fight that occurred Sunday which may have involved some of the same members as a near shooting on Aug. 26.

The fight began around 6 p.m. in the area of N. 10th Street, when members of the first gang drove by and taunted a member of the second gang with an air gun, said Lt. Jim Kayes of the DeKalb Police Department.

After the taunting, two individuals exited the vehicle and instigated a fight with a member of the opposing gang. When police arrived, the altercation had ceased and the members in the car had left.

Kayes said the incident involved the same gangs and some of the same people as the near shooting on Aug. 26 at Shipman Place, between 7th and 10th Streets.

In that incident, a fight believed to be centered around gang activity was reported in the area around 9 p.m.

Shots were reported fired in the fight and shell casings were recovered. No arrests were made from the incident and the gun has not been recovered.

The fight on Sunday is still under investigation, and no arrests have been made.

I'm not going around 10th street anytime soon. What kind of gangs take place in dekalb?

DeKalb police chief: Violent crimes may not be long-term concern

Quote:DeKalb’s surrounding communities may also have an impact on the crime rate. Feithen said the town is positioned between three communities – Elgin, Aurora and Rockford – that have gang and drug problems. Feithen said DeKalb is also feeling the impact from Chicago crime.

Quote:NIU has lost its suitcase school image, and students are now staying around for weekends and inviting friends from out of town, which can lead to incoming crime, Feithen said.

Feithen isn’t passing the blame to the university or its students, but said it is a combination of things.

“We are constantly challenged by drugs and gangs,” he said. “Urban areas and suburbs are feeling the impact.”
too many people moving from the city to northern, dropping out of school and becoming dekalb townies. i don't know if you've noticed but there is a good percentage of people that NIU admits into the university that, in my opinion, have very little chance of graduating or very little desire to graduate.

If anybody has ever lived in the dorms (me 2 yrs ago), they would be very aware of this.
thats mostly what i was referring to...or i know plenty of people living in apartments and townhouses that i dont even think attend niu. just live out in dekalb being useless.
This is a common theme.. and something that should be considered when you discuss things like the chance program. Clearly the program helps a lot of people, but some of the people getting admitted are bringing the campus and town down as a whole. It only takes a few people who have bad friends to make things worse for everyone.
good to get these discussions going. it's not even homecoming yet. i usually spend the few weeks before then practicing my "no i don't have any cigarettes, and no you can't drink my beer in my room"

+1...

its a damn joke..and anyone who disagrees is too politically correct for their own good. its getting kind of ridiculous
Part of it is the factors you've mentioned, but what makes it attractive in the first place is that Dekalb, as a college town, is a cheap place to live.
DeKalb was ripe with losers in the late 90's, but you guys make is sound a lot worse now - and it was tiresome when I was in DeKalb....

So what are summers like now in DeKalb I LOVED summers in DeKalb - no one around, quiet as a regular town but with a core group of students hanging out every night at the bars and having the same house parties. I think I made more friends in the summers than the school year.....

The difference is there are shootings and more murders now. Back then it was a fist fight and possibly a knife with a rare murder not guns. That is the difference. But I agree, it isn't just minorities. They just seem to be a much larger percentage of the problem.
