ApSU beating UMi

Irish losing BIG

Kent beating ISU

BGSU beatin Mn

Purdue wacking UT

Akron beating Army

Mizz beating Illini

Kansas blasting CMU

Iowa beating punchless NIU

Finally, did MAC stock rise, sink or stay the same with results from week one?
APSU beating Michigan - pleasing, but asking why we can't beat a Big Ten team for the number of times we play them.
Why can't our program be better?
Give the MAC EAST alot of credit right now.
MAC WEST should feel like crap.

obviously the tartan win was fun, surprising and a thrill to witness....as a whole, the MAC east surprised me....played well, and got the OOC wins

I thought toledo would shake off last year and compete but that game was plagued with everything that took them down last year. I would be surprised if they can get it back together this year.

ND losing big surprised me....I knew they were mediochre....just not bad....and they looked bad.

The MAC did not gain any recognition points this week. no high profile games won and the ones we were in we were not competitive in. (my hope was fo WMU but that went by quickly)

THe west getting spanked from top to bottom was the biggest surprise...no one, not 1, looked like they should be playing in the MACC at the end of the season.

Asking if losing to Iowa annoyed Huskie fans...hmmm I WONDER. I for one was very excited and pleased NIU lost to Iowa 01-wingedeagle

Iowa did not punish NIU like you thought cybes, was that a little frustrating for you to not see the big boy just roll through the mid major team?
cyberdawg Wrote:ApSU beating UM

Very surprised because Michigan was ranked #5. Clearly overrated.

cyberdawg Wrote:Irish losing BIG

Not surprised. Georgia Tech always has a very good defense and ND has virtually no experience at QB.

cyberdawg Wrote:Kent beating ISU

Most called for the upset. At least i know i did.

cyberdawg Wrote:BGSU beatin Mn

Not surprising. New coaching staff in Minnesota and Minnesota is a very medicore Big Ten team.

cyberdawg Wrote:Purdue wacking UT

This surprised me. Toledo is tough at home.

cyberdawg Wrote:Akron beating Army

Army sucks. No surprise that Akron beat them.

cyberdawg Wrote:Mizz beating Illini

Not surprised.

cyberdawg Wrote:Kansas blasting CMU

This game has to worry CMU fans. Kansas was winning 45-0 at one point. I'm going to assume CMU scored a meaningless TD against Kansas backups. You should not get beat that bad by Kansas in football.

I'd say it raised a little. Two BCS wins this week was nice, but MWC outdid us by getting three BCS wins. And CUSA looks like the same weak CUSA this weekend.
The result that gave me the most difficulty was explaining to my wife why our App State/Michigan tickets were sitting on the kitchen counter (she's an alum) while we were sitting in Soldier Field watching an anemic-looking NIU team that quite frankly has played boring and predictable football for most of last year and I assume will do so this year as well--I know last year Garrett had some great moments, but honestly most every game was Garrett dive, Garrett draw, Phil or Dan dump a short pass on 3rd and long, Punt--Lather, Rinse, Repeat--then Repeat again as necessary.

Okay...so NIU pays the bills that's probably the biggest reason we were there instead of the Big House, and we we will continue to be there, but the results are disappointing. I'm tired of trying to convince her NIU games are worth spending good time and money going to and I'm not getting any help from the on field product. I have great respect for the man that Coach Novak is, and I have had several great conversations with him over the past year, but the product he is putting out there is weak.

Good Lord, I miss Georgia football, and now I have to contend with a wife who believes, probably accurately, that her Div I-Championship team could run circles around our DI-Bowl team.
Worried...NIU getting dominated, the score was not indicative of what happened in that game
Annoyed...ND losing, they are my second team
Pleased...Michigan losing, such a great thing to hear
Michigan game was just amazing

Notre Dame game was very disheartening for me. I wasn't expecting a win but gettin blown out at home is embarassing.

NIU..Well, the defense was fun to watch. Offense is scaring me, but its only week 1 so we will see what happens. Reminded me of watching Bears game from a few years back. Not a big fan of the play calling at all.

CMU....ouch

There's a reason you don't see Roy Wittke and John Bond in the same room - they may well be the same person - at least their play calling is the same. Boring, predictable (save for the flea flicker), with little probability of success in making the 3rd down and long plays. The 5 yard dump pass over the middle is excrutiating to watch.

Let's just hope that another Division 1 team doesn't come into DeKalb next week and avenge their "should have beat NIU" game from 2005.

And throwing into TRIPLE freakin coverage twice doesn't sound like a D1 quarterback to me. With three in the pattern somebody has to have single coverage...and Dan, learn to throw out of bounds when the heat is on you.
Appalachian's win is likely to be remembered for a very long time as the biggest genuine upset featuring David and Goliath in college football history.

Can you name any bigger? I cannot.

I know now but do you know where is ASU located and can you name any three teams in their conference?
I couldn't until visiting their website moments ago.

Can there be many this morning sober in Boone, North Carolina?

What lessons can be drawn from this upset?

1)Speed , athleticism at skill positions and taking measured risks can cure alot of shortcomings elsewhere on the field.

2) With the widespread popularity of football replacing other American sports and speciality camps available offseason and offseason conditioning programs, there are ALOT of talented, dedicated young players and coaches out there making the most of their limited resources. You now see fewer and fewer black men playing pro baseball. The door to a better future for many talented athletes is football or bball.

3)The gap between the halves and have nots is shrinking. The difference between winning and losing - even yesterday- comes down to three plays after all is said and done despite being outmanned upfront. Blown coverage on punt return , blown but makeable FG for Nendick and not scoring TD opening third quarter from two yardline on a mistake by coaching staff . The gap between A and AA is also shrinking. SIU will be no walk in the park for NIU either.

(If you have not read much of the program guide from Showdown in SF, do so. Plenty to learn.
Three of our "sister" state schools are in the top 20 preseason D1-aa preview rankings. Many of their players are also from state of Illinois. )

more later ...godda go....

do not be embarrassed nor ashamed of yesterday' s results. Disappointed ? certainly.

I NEVER am happy about losing no matter what the margin, point spreads or opponent's name - despite what words others may wish to put in my mouth. I just try to tell it like I think it is .

Too bad Mich isn't at Iowa this season to compare results & learn how good or not are the Wolverines. We seem to have a knack at scheduling BT teams in upper half and rarely catch a Mn , Indiana, Illinois or NU when they are in bottom half.

Congrats to the Mountaineers .....from Boone. NC. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You made the little guys proud.
Some of you guys are amazing. 1 game and you are already ripping on Wittke and saying he's not doing anythiung different the Bond?

Yesterday we:
Ran the statue of liberty
Ran a 4 WR set
Lined Anderson up in the slot
Used bunch formations
Used a 2 back set

Those are 5 things off the top of my head I never saw with Bond, and I didn't include the flea flicker because Bond did that last year. Do you expect us to go all Boise State vs. Oklahoma every single game? Did you expect to see Wittke's entire playbook in one game?

It's insane. Everyone needs to back up from the ledge.
I said earlier I saw alot of different looks from NIU yesterday. That was most encouraging. Some deception mixed with an improved running game should pay some dividends down the road this season. Apply same to last year WITH Wolfe - and who knows where the limits may have been.
Everything that happened in the MAC West outside of us and App State. And the Illini haters should be nervous here if anything to be honest. They fumbled at the 1 and it went 99 yards the other way for a 14 point swing. They had their backup, freshman QB in for 3/4 of the game. The defense played poorly against a great QB. Their star RB had 33 yards on 11 carries. And they STILL came 21 yards from beating a team that will finish either 1st or 2nd in the Big 12 North and make a good bowl on a neutral field. Most noteably, Zook didn't do anything to screw them up either and the entire team except the MLB and a few lineman is young. Just a warning if you hate the Illini, might want to look away soon. Well unless you hate the Illini hoops team, that will be fun to do for a while starting this year.

I was most annoyed by our offense and the fans of Iowa. The 1st will improve, the 2nd will only get worse as time goes on. But hey, life could be worse.

I agree 100% some people expect trick plays every set. Our play calling & scheme are fine. We just have to execute better.
I'm back inside from the ledge.
