That's the message to Ohio "regional" public universities:

Ohio State is more like "the Death Star" than the Flagship.
I read the thread on the Zips board.03-snooty

Akron fans are right. The state of Ohio @ 12 million people is just way too big to have only one single quality flagship university.

What Ohio has needed is a flagship system. Ohio State already is a research flagship school. They are currently top 10 in research funding today. Its the other good research schools like Cincinnati and Toledo that need resource protection from Cleveland St and Youngstown St. The state is big enough for 4 or 5 research universities but not 12 of them.
Sorry, they're not going to take away our funding in pursuit of a "national championship in education." If ohio state wants more money, I suggest it look elsewhere for it.

Amen to that, it's a political nonstarter. They're big but they don't have the numbers to raid the budgets of 12 other universities in NE Ohio, NW Ohio, SW Ohio (&OU) to pad their own. Strickland would be thrown out of office on his head. Like UA's president said, let Tosu (Central Ohio Regional University) learn to keep their place. Since they're so great anyway they should have no problem attracting all the private donations and all the research funding they want from the Fed and agencies other than the state of Ohio.
