Hello, yes I am a WVU fan but I come in peace

I would like to ask WMU fans only 2 questions.

1. What do you think the score will be?

2. How many yards will Slaton have at the end of the game?

Please be nice! Im not trying to start a thread for WVU or WMU bashing!

Thanks
Slayton? Who's Slayton? 05-stirthepot Seriously though, we get very little news about your team from the media in this area. And I only recall two of your games being shown on TV here last year. I assume Slaton is one of your RB's. All I can tell you is that we held Virginia Tech's much-heralded backs to very minimal yardage for most of the game when we played them a few years ago. We did the same to Garrett Wolfe from NIU recently. We're very proud of our defense.

You'll find a three-page thread here with lots of score predictions..."WMU vs WVU Predictions".
I have read that WVU is going to be very, very good this year and therefore our first game this year will be "character building." The question is how long can we stay with WVU? Last time we met at Morgantown, at the half, it was close (0-0?, or close to that). We do have some experience in the game (~16 returnees) and the DB's have all been mentioned for their outstanding play. The QB situation is up in the air right now. And we graduated our best LB last year. Our TE is on the Mackey Award watch list. We have enough weapons that we can be dangerous.

I agree. I think the WVU fans are under the impression their players are known by one and all. I for one couldn't tell you who they'll field.

They're a BCS school and I'm sure they'll be formidable, but any more than other BCS school we've played in the past few seasons?

I'll start boning up on WVU the last few days before the game. As of right now, however, I have no clue about their team. Anymore than they have about ours.

Is this hubris about "everybody HAS to know about our players!" a BCS thing? It must be a very heavy emotional load, assuming everyone, everywhere simply HAS to know about us! We are so formidable! Trying to live up to the hype must be a continual challenge. Everytime you slip up or perform at a less than stellar level you have to explain away your team's effort. Amazing.
1. WVU 38 WMU 17
2. Slaton - 110 yards
We will lose. But, WMU will prove to be WVU toughest win! mark my words.03-shhhh
I think he asked about Slaton because he is considered one of the top 3 Heisman candidates in the country...Hes not just a run of the mill player from a BCS school. And you call yourselves football fans. 05-nono

LOL. So I guess you never knew about Reggie Bush? WMU never played USC, but I'm sure it would have been close. Or how 'bout McFadden?? Nope, Arkie not on your schedule. Who is he???

All "BCS Schools" must be the same. Wow, that's some interesting logic. Why do they bother even ranking them!!?? Oh, and for the record, WVU is #3 in the first AP vote. And Slaton was a Heisman finalist last year and is on his 2nd SI cover with this month's issue. But he's just a run of the mill RB.
As I said earlier, your team gets next to no media coverage in our area. Most of us have no clue who you've got, and probably won't be all that interested until game day. But I'll tell you this....don't bet the farm on any preseason team or Heisman rankings. They're notoriously inaccurate. Let's see how things look for you and your guy come the end of November.

Not trying to be difficult here. Enjoy your preseason hopes and dreams. Personally, I'd rather see you guys up at the top at the end of the year than many other BSC Big Boys. I usually root for the underdogs, and I think WVU is still in that role at this point.
Wait wait wait....because you're on an SI cover, you're now invincible?

I think Jimmy Barnes may disagree

Do not mistake hype for talent or success.

And jh901, did you really just compare Slaton to Reggie Bush? You guys may want to lay off the meth. It's an epidemic.

Slaton is compared to Tony Dorsett here in Pittsburgh, so I think you will see that a Bush comparison (although that wasn't my intention) is not far-fetched. He was hurt all year last season and still made the Heisman short list. Watch some youtube of Slaton. He has 4.37 40 and hits the hole so fast.

I wouldn't expect your local media to cover the Big East, but you all have the internet and ESPN and SI, etc. Would you be more likely to "believe" if the team was USC or Texas?

And I do agree that pre-season hype is exactly that. But the same rules apply to LSU and Florida and others....I just don't think you believe WVU is in the same league.

Hope you all make to Morgantown. I look forward to hearing your impression.
Don't forget about your quarterback being a Heisman candidate as well. I don't think one school ever had two Heisman candidates.

West Virginia has a great football team....but don't forget it is a beautiful campus with terrific academics as well.

Western is an unknown throughout the nation....but I am proud to have been a graduate of WMU and appreciative of the foundation they gave me to get a full scholarship to Boston College for graduate school as two of my classmates from Western were going to Harvard Law during the same year.

Go Broncos!!!!!!
Slow down!!! Reggie Bush...please!!! Heismen voting is nothing until after the first game. As for preseason top 25 why do they bother ranking them...preseason top 25 is trash and is only put into place for bragging rights and a little bit of cash for the guys who predict them. Football does not start until September 1 and on September 2 we will know who won. I am not only a fan of western but also that of a nameless BCS school who has traditionally been terrible but every once and a while they are picked in the preseason top 15. But every year the seem to fall on their faces. Dont buy into the hype buy into results.

Does your coach end each practice with "We were voted #3 in the AP poll, please dont lose and make the experts wrong!" If any coach did that they would be coaching 6th graders. But since it is the guys coming over here telling us to lay down because the mighty #3 is on their way, I guess that western should lay down and cry mercy. If you were so good why not be preseason #1 but I guess the experts know something that we dont...WVU cant handle USC...right?

Oh and here is my prediction for WVU you will lose 3 games. Mark my words because right now they are as important as the AP poll.

LOL. Let them have their moment in the sun, Whinny. They're under the impression everybody is focussed on WVU and their football prospects. If it's in Sports Illustrated then they must be FORMIDABLE. We might as well not even play the game, right???

Wasn't it Michael Vick who came into Waldo Stadium a few years back and we shut them down for a half before Drach started fumbling the ball away? Vick looked like a ham-handed clod that day, couldn't do anything right. He sure wasn't living up to the hype.

Hope WVU carries their egos into the game along with their shoulder pads. Would suit us just fine! 02-13-banana
Anyone else remember when we played up at Madison on the openning game of the season a few years back? They were supposed to be rated highly, # 7 in one poll as I remember. We played them in their faces for the whole game. Lost a close one as I recall, with a little help from their officials.

Who's intimidated by WVU? It's just another game in my book. 02-13-banana
BroncoPhilly Wrote:Who's intimidated by WVU?

Who suggested that any fan should be intimidated? You will watch the game, likely on television. Players will come into the game excited to hit someone on the other team, so I don't think either team will be intimidated.

My point was that the WMU attitude is that WVU is just another team from a BCS conference. While the pre-season ranks are somewhat meaningless, they do give one an idea of what the "experts" think BEFORE seeing any action on the field. This is based on what returns from last year and what new guys are expected to contribute. WVU could lose 3 games, but it simply isn't as likely as it is for some others.

I guess you guys will simply shrug when you are ranked in the top 10 pre-season someday??? LOL. You should keep in mind what it has taken since 1980 to get to this level. Your program likely has the same goal.

As for Slaton and White, I think the whole nation knows about them. Well, at least the college football fans. The dynamic duo (plus Owen Schmitt- #1 fullback) is considered the best backfield in America and if you heard quotes from opposing coaches last year, you would understand our excitement.

Hope several of you make the trip. Good luck in MAC this season!
Quote:As for Slaton and White, I think the whole nation knows about them.

Ok. Fine. Whatever. If it floats your boat to think college football fandom is fixated on WVU football then I'm cool with it.

I'll just omit mentioning that, before WVU fans started posting those two names in our forum, I'd never heard of them before.

Someone mentioned we didn't get this hubris when we played VTech, UVirginia or Florida State. I agree, we sure didn't.

I understand Marshall a little bit better, now. 03-lmfao
I hadn't heard of Slaton and White before the recent posts either. O.K., I probably heard but didn't remember (I know I caught at least some of a WV game last season).

I consider myself a fan of Western Michigan and secondarily the MAC. Off the top of my head, I could probably name more players on the EMU squad than um or USC.

It's not that I see the WV game as unimportant. I want to see a great (injury free) game from the Broncos. If we won, it would be great. However, I think the focus is really on the MAC games.

How many of the WV posters could name any of the WMU starters before reading these threads? Are they not good fans if they don't know the starters on the opposing team for the first game of what could be a national championship season?
Quote:How many of the WV posters could name any of the WMU starters before reading these threads?

Great point. We placed two of the top rated receivers-Jennings at GB and Schaeffler at Denver-in the NFL two years ago. Do the fans at WVU know THAT? Or are they so hung up on their new-found status as Heismann contenders they can't see past the ends of their noses?

A football team consists of 11 players, not two RB's. Think about it.
Do I count? LOL
