What's going on out there?

Hawaii has two freshman WR's that are "impressing" the coaches. ...and one is a 6' 4" walk-on. Kinda surprised that the new wides are getting so much attention.

What's going on with everybody else?
No real surprises concerning players. They reported to camp this morning and got their physicals and equipment. Practices will start tomorrow at 2 pm. It appears that the players will ALL be moving into the same dorm to help build team unity (at least for training camp). It also seems that we may be adding a white stripe to our helments. That's not confirmed, but speculated by quite a few folks.

JL - I hope they "don't" add the white stripe. Why tamper with the sharpest uni in football?

Hawaii went through the 220's yesterday. Each "position" has to run a certain amount of 220's to prove they stayed in shape during the off-season. Nearly a fourth of the team didn't complete the "drill" within the alloted time. Most of the "failures" came from the new guys. yep...they aint in HS anymore :)
At Boise State we have the following developments:

# 1. Jeremy Childs is really looking impressive (Sophomore WR)

# 2. Pete Cavender wore a football helmet for the first time in 16 months this week. Pete is the twin brother of Jeff Cavender and he was also a starter on the BSU offensive line during the 2005 season (at Right Guard) but he missed all of last season with a ruptured Achilles tendon injury that he suffered last summer. He is currently listed as a backup offensive guard right now.

# 3. Johnny Tivao, a high school defensive tackle who was part of BSU's 2007 recruiting class, did not qualify academically and will not be joining the Boise State team this fall.

# 4. Boise State has added (at least) twelve new walk-ons to the football team. They are as follows:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joey Chavez (Diamond Bar, Calif.) 5' 11" 260 lbs offensive lineman
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sam Douthit (Eagle High) 6' 3" 250 lbs offensive lineman - Douthit was named to the 5-A All-Idaho 1st team offense
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tyler Shoemaker (Mountain View High) 6' 3" 215 lbs wide receiver
Shoemaker was also named to the 5-A All-Idaho 1st team offense
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ryan Angstman (Meridian HS/Santa Barbara CC) 6' 1" 220 lbs JC tight end
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ricky Cookman (Clackamas, Ore.) 5' 11" 175 lbs wide receiver with 4.5 forty speed (http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:Mt7B...cd=1&gl=us)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stephen Gabbard (Huntington Beach, Calif.) 6' 1" 215 lbs running back - named to 1st team All League as a Junior in HS in 2005 and also named Sunset League Back of the year in 2005 (He rushed for 1,583 yards and 21 TDs in ’05)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Brock Jaramillo (Temecula, Calif./Orange Coast College) JC Kicker
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Shaun Jordan (Rocklin, Calif.) 6' 3" 208 lbs Safety
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeff Lowe (Aloha, Ore./College of Siskiyous/MidAmerica Nazarene) 6' 1" 240 lbs defensive end/long snapper
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Travis Stanaway (Bellevue, Wash.) 5' 10" 190 lbs linebacker (17 sacks last season) - Stanaway made a diving interception in yesterday's practice session
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dave Wilson (Powell, Wyo.) 6' 1" 213 lbs linebacker
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matt Wilson (Powell, Wyo.) 6' 1" 210 lbs linebacker
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Wilsons are twin brothers. Here's a link to a story on these two twin linebackers out of Powell, WY.:

# 4. Another prospective walk-on, who has been working out with the Boise State team all summer, is Korey Hall's cousin Cody Darrington (5' 10" 175 lbs linebacker out of Glenns Ferry, ID).

# 5. Two former Boise State football players have been added to the Boise State coaching staff (former NFL lineman Matt Hill and former Boise State running back Aristotle Thompson).

# 6. True Freshman wide receiver Austin Pettis is already being considered for playing time this fall as a true freshman (6' 3" 200 lbs) because he has stood out in the fall practices already.

# 7. Tim Brady, a former walk-on at BSU, is looking to earn the starting spot at one of the two outside linebacker positions. BTW Brady also earned himself a scholarship for his play last spring and he also got married this summer (to one of Dan Hawkins' daughters - namely Brittany Hawkins). Here is a link to a story on Brady:

# 8. True Freshman running back D.J. Harper (from Texas) has been playing with the veterans rather than with the newcomers, i.e., he has been impressive.
JOE ANDERSON is a WR out of Texarkana (supposedly a 4.4 guy with great hands). Last year he caught balls from Ryan Mallet who committed to Michigan. He's supposedly the surprise of the fall so far. It appears that he'll play early and often. This is great because we've really needed a few guys to step up at the WR position.
WR Nnamdi Gwacham 6-3 209lb So has been doing very well. I could see him battling for the starting job on the other side of the field from Kevin Robinson.

TB Robert Turbin 5-11 195lb Fr. has been giving our projected starter, Aaron Lesue 5-10 195lb Sr. a run for his money.

Many are impressed with our offensive line's size, especially the new freshmen.

QB Sean Setzer 6-2 231lb Jr. seems to be the leading candidate to start at QB. The coaches like his size, arm, accuracy and durability.
I went yesterday to watch the Aggies scrimmage. I'm really impressed with the potential in our offense. Our new OC, Darrell Dickey, is working wonders. If he chooses the right QB, Utah State's offense is going to shine.

Our kids are bigger than before. Aaron Lesue and our OL are particularly bigger. Lesue is probably the likely starter at TB. He's a durable kid, to say the least.

We looked to be an improved team, folks. But, then again, August is typically our best month. 02-13-banana

ejm - How's the new "addition(s)" to the athletic facilities looking?

Oh, and what'd you think of your QB? RB's? WR's?

Next to Hawaii and Fresno State, I think Utah State could make a good arguement for having the best facilities in the WAC.

Quote:Oh, and what'd you think of your QB? RB's? WR's?

The QB position will be just fine with Setzer. We're looking at a 4 win season or better with him as our QB.

RB: We've got a ton of talent for the future. We've got one senior and a bunch of freshman. The senior is going to be a very good TB. The freshman are very talented, but we're yet to see if they can handle pt with no experience in D1A other than a redshirt year. Our FB position could give us some extremely productive minutes if they're properly used.

WR: Robinson would be a starter on most WAC teams. Nnambdi Gwacham is 6-3 210 and has great hands and speed. We've got some others that are very talented.

The bottom line is that this team will be tough to beat if we start the right QB who can get the TEs, RBs, and WRs the ball in the passing game. I believe Setzer is very capable. Jackson is a turnover waiting to happen. We've got a soph QB who shined yesterday while Setzer was held out for the rest of this week for a very minor injury.
Oh, and another thing.
UNLV is our first game. Pay attention to who we start at QB for that game. If we start Setzer, there's a good chance that we'll beat UNLV. IF we beat UNLV, we have confidence going into Laramie where I think we'd have a shot to win in that case. At that point we're 2-1 going into the SJSU game, who we beat the last time they came to Logan. There's a chance that we could be 3-1 going into our game with Utah. That's not out of the rhelm of possibilities, folks, believe it or not. 04-jawdrop

But if we don't beat UNLV, there's a chance we could be 0-3 going into the SJSU game and I wouldn't like our chances against the Spartans in that case. And you could see where our season could go from there....
I guess the big surprise at Nevada is that the offense, which lost all of its stats leaders, has been outplaying what should be a strong defense.
