Florida State hangs on to beat the Gators
by Drew Hankin

With a 6-4 win over the Florida Gators in Gainesville on Tuesday night, the Florida State Seminole baseball team exorcised some of the demons left over last season's Super Regionals. The Noles played a complete game against UF, with power hitting, very good pitching, and clutch defense, despite the three errors on the scoreboard.

Danny Diaz had a phenomenal game both at the plate and behind it. The junior catcher had struggled all season long and saw his batting average dip to the nether regions below .100 until tonight's two-hit outburst which drove in two runs. Diaz also threw out an extremely fast runner on the base paths, and blocked several balls in the dirt.

Tony Thomas Jr was also instrumental in the win over the rival Gators, not only with his bat, going 2-4 with a single and his third home run of the season, but also in the field where he helped turn two key double plays, both hit into by centerfielder Gavin Dickey, one of Florida's fastest players.

Tyler Chambliss (4-0) got the win throwing 106 pitches in 6.1 innings. The junior allowed three runs on seven hits and walked only one batter while striking out four. Brent Marsh gave up one run in 1.1 innings of relief, and Matt DiBlasi faced one batter to finish out the 8th inning before the Seminoles turned to closer Luke Tucker in the ninth. Tucker struck out two out of three Gator batters to earn his second save of the season.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, first baseman Dennis Guinn homered to left for his team-leading fourth of the season that tied the game at 1-1.

An inning later, the Tribe exploded for three more runs to take a 4-1 lead. With one out in the fifth, Thomas singled to right and left fielder Mark Gildea, returning from hamstring injury that kept him out of the Minnesota series last weekend, then drew a walk before Diaz's double to left center scored them both. After a UF pitching change, right fielder Jack Rye singled up the middle to score Diaz and put FSU ahead by three.

Designated hitter Josh Spivey led off the sixth inning with a single to center, and scored when Thomas went yard for the third time this year, to put Florida State ahead 6-2.

Florida picked up a run in both the seventh and eighth innings, but it was too little and too late as they fell to 8-4 on the season, and have now lost three of their last four games. The Noles have now won eight straight games, and improved to 11-1 on the season. They now have a few days off before hosting the Brown University Bears this weekend. Game times are 6:00 on Friday, 1:00 on Saturday, and 12:00 noon on Sunday.
