Full Version: What is the MAC growth strategy?

The MAC is trying I believe to grow its TV value to self preserve the conference.......CUSA makes 3.65 mil per year from its deal with ESPN, which includes 1.5 mil for the rights to the CUSA championship game. CUSA also makes 7.65 mil from its deal with CSTV.

Thus, the MAC is trying to build up its championship game in Detroit and the MAC tourney in Cleveland as big events that are worth television dollars to drive the entire TV conference.

For this reason, the MAC believes its imparative to maintain at least 12 members to protect the MACC........so they added Temple as a cushion against realignment.

The MAC will not splinter off into a 9 or 10 team conference.....the WAC has 9 or 10 teams and only makes 1.4 mil from its TV deal with ESPN.....the MAC alone could make 1.4 mil on its TV deal by hosting the MACC. The MAC has too many rivalries as well that would be affected by a split.

I predict you are going to see a gradual equilibrium between the MAC and CUSA.........the MAC will improve its basketball and add TV revenue while CUSA will add regional schools UNT, MTSU, and WKU and start looking more like the MAC.

CUSA future

Everytime CUSA is raided it will take a hit in TV value which will scare off any MAC schools from joining while the MAC will continue to grow its value to dollar numbers that are closer to CUSA's...........and with less travel costs in the MAC, the TV dollars only have to be half as big as what is paid to CUSA to make the MAC a better deal.

Thats easy. Kick out all teams not in Michigan and Ohio(NIU,Buffalo, Temple and BSU). Add YSU, Northern Michigan and 1 more team to give them an even amt of teams. Change the name to Michio Conference. THe logo will consist of abandoned auto/auto parts factories. 05-stirthepot
I was one day ahead of schedule from the big TV announcement with my post but I will say the MAC is continuing to improve.

New for 2007:

-MAC Championship game on a Saturday.

-MAC game of week syndicated across all MAC markets.

-Fox Sports Ohio announcing its selected games prior to the season.

-Major renovations at BGSU, NIU, Ball State, and KSU.

-More details that I don't even know about yet!
TV package has got to turn some heads. MAC recruiting should really be improved as they are front and center on Saturdays.
MAC is like the Miller Highlife of College football. Honest football for an honest price. Ohio State $100 dollar tickets ....you all must be crazy.

Ohio Bobcats 89$ bucks for family of four for season tickets........now that's living the highlife.

Paying Big Ten Network for Indiana vs Illinois for womens tennis ............You got to be joking.....

MAC football on ABC this fall for free .......now that's what I'm taking about.
MAC has got to expand it's footprint, even if it means 16 or even 18 schools. MAC doesn't have that much money to split any way, more bowls & BB bids might cover additions. ILL St & Missouri ST in west & UMASS in east.

Let's be clear, it might be on ABC where you are, but ABC isn't televising those games. ABC isn't picking up MAC games.

But the whole thing is a good deal for both the MAC and Big East. Apparently the Big East will take over many of the midwest affiliates of the MAC after the MAC slate of games is done.

No. That's a real bad idea. Don't take on teams for the sake of taking on a team. That's something the NHL does. Take on a team because they fit. If that is eventually UMass or Delaware, go for it.

How is any of this a "growth" strategy?

Just out of curiosity, I have not read the article but will the MAC games be shown in the BE region(especially in the region that has a Husky football team of their own)? I know they used to show the Big10/11 ESPN plus games up here. I hope that continues with the MAC.
im not sure why the mac added a 13 th team for football.no way the ncaa could drop a mac school to1-aa unless the school wanted to.does anyone even know how they are going to keep track w-l on cross division games? if only divison games count then you are really only playing five confernece games ,or six that matter.why even have a conference in the first place.im not saying i was against it ,but having 13 teams makes no sense.we need to either add 14 or go back to 12.if you add it may help the footprint, and tv revenue.
adding temple as the 13 teams(it's only my opinion) messed things up. if there is no other plan to add or drop a team from the mac then what was the point.

I'm not convinced that the BE will do anything ... any time soon. If thats the case CUSA wont be changing anytime soon.. If the BE splits.. or adds 1 for FB only.. It wont happen before 2010 with 2013 being more likely. If CUSA loses only 1 ... dont be surprised if TCU comes back.. when it looked likely that tulane might not survive Katrina.. they did some behind the scenes talks with a couple of AD's .. they are not very happy with the way MWC tv has gone.

I think TCU back to CUSA is at least a possibility with the way things are going.

The MWC since its inception has been a big bust.....this was a group of schools from the WAC that was part of the Bowl Alliance and would send a team to the Cotton Bowl on occassion.......while CUSA and the MAC have caught up to the MWC they have spun their wheels for the last decade or so.

I would say in order CUSA will be looking at....

1. TCU (if they want back in)
2. WKU
3. MTSU (if Memphis leaves)
4. Florida Atlantic (if UCF leaves)

It will be interesting to see how much money the MAC will be making with its new TV deal because if it is a substantial figure it will probably take any MAC school off the table for CUSA expansion discussions.
