I found a thread on their board with them talking about the Red Alert which is their version of our Red Riot. I was curious as to how they were operating their organization.

Red Alert = Gay

Then again, they do go to ISU, so what do you expect.

The Red Alert...that does sort of remind me of something other than a basketball fan group, like maybe an annoying, flashing red light and beeping noise warning everyone about an incoming Gay Pride Parade.

Then again, we dont have much room to talk either until our team wins and more students care...but at least our name is cooler
ISU used to have a student group called the Red Rage. They are a perfect example of how winning determines how successful the group is.

For example, back in their "glory years" where they regularly won 20+ games a season and even made the NCAA Tourney a few times in a row, they would sell out nearly game and the Red Rage would be packed.. up to 5,000 student's filling up a corner of the arena. They were rabid, they were loud, and they made Redbird Arena a tough place to play. About 1,000 or so would even take the trip to St. Louis for the MVC Tourney.

When Stallings left for Vandy and they went back to a mediocre 500 team, the interest level of students dropped off... From then on they would get 25 students if they were lucky... sometimes only a dozen or so.. it was a pretty pathetic site. It's been 2 years now since I've been to an ISU game (i used to go all the time.. i despised them but went anyway bc it was in my own backyard) so I don't know what the student turnout is lately but I can't imagine it's much better than that.

good insight....that just goes to show that there is only so much a few fans can do...if NIU gets off to a quick start, the northern star gives lots of exposure about the new coach and style of play, and we start to make a push for a mac championship (a convincing mac championship, not an 11-7 mac west division chamoionship), then i think thered be a significantly larger turnout
