Sports it ain't, but the headline on the Johnson City Press today was that ETSU's Vice President for Health Affairs was leaving ETSU for a similar position at South Alabama.

Now, it wasn't that long ago that you tried to tell us that an ETSU coach would NEVER be interested in ANYTHING at South Alabama. That USA was looked down upon by the fine folks in the Yellowhammer State as being a place for people with two-ring notebook binders and Skoal rings on the back pocket of their pants!

I just found it ironic a high profile member of the faculty would leave ETSU for USA under those circumstances.

By the way, the man who is leaving to go to USA- Dr. Ronald Franks- is being replaced by Dr. Wylsie Bishop.

So a few questions-

Is Bishop being demoted from VP for Administration?

If so, then is she being punished for football not coming back- since she had a very prominent visual role in the movement?

And if she is not, then doesn't it speak volumes for how ETSU is the medical department and then everything else?

I mean, VP for Health Affairs or VP for Administration. You tell me what title seems to encompass more.
Actually USA is a well respected medical/allied health/public health university. It is similar to ETSU. USA and UAB are probably the two best healthcare related universities in that state.

My opinion is that Dr. Bishop's move is more of a lateral move.
I hope it was a lateral move for Dr. Bishop.

I thought she was a bit naive in her role fronting the Football Vote movement, but still very classy.
Hopefully that will eliminate her from consideration when the pasty-faced liar finally goes to the retirement community. The more I think about it, the more I think George W. Bush has done a better job in his Presidential role than Paul Stanton has. Thoughts?

Well that's a no brainer
George W. Bush is much more well spoken than Paul Stanton.

Consider that for a minute.

Goldfinger

He also didn't wake up one morning and decide to sell off Texas due to budget cuts.

I'm an ETSU grad and a Memphis grad. I read this board along with Memphis' board, but I have never posted to this board and have only posted a few times to the Memphis board.

I will say up front that I support Stanton's end to football at ETSU because in my opinion (for football) it will never work as long as everyone in the tri-cities supports UT football. Got that out of the way.

I'm also a former ETSU employee and I think that Paul Stanton is a pile of dung. The VP for Health Affairs is just a created position. It was created as a way to fire Ron Franks (from Dean) without really firing him. He "promoted" Franks to fire him, because Franks wouldn't do what he wanted him to do as Dean. Paul Stanton is a politician, it was a brilliant political move. The problem was that Stanton was listening to the wrong people (either that or he is a complete idiot) and what Franks was trying to do was correct, now you have major problems over in the college of medicine and the spin doctors are working to paint a different picture. The problems are both fiscal and managerial. While Stanton is a brilliant politician, he is a terrible administrator. He will piss away 70k to get a 10k donation. As an alumni and former employee, I have absolutely no respect for Paul Stanton as an educator, administrator or human being. I view him as being entirely without character.
Whoa! Welcome Exxon! We have a Tiger in our tank!

Your point on UT overshadowing ETSU is valid. It's occuring now with the basketball programs.

But that's what happens when you hire a basketball coach because he is the old UT coach's best friend.

And really, 15 years ago, was there really a less relevant sports entity in the Tri-Cities than UT basketball?

What I have stated repeatedly is that ETSU has to act like the Division I school in the Tri-Cities. You have to take on UT and promote yourself as the area's true home team.

Do that, and you'd be surprised at what kind of a fan base you can draw.
