Offensive guard
Lake Villa (IL) Lakes Community
Ht: 6-foot-3
Wt: 280 lbs
He said he wanted to get his recruiting done as early as possible. He felt NIU was the school for him and he needed no further reason to wait longer. Other schools were showing serious interest, including Central Michigan which was going to offer him the day after he committed to NIU. He is glad to be able to focus on his senior season and excited about NIU.

Quote:Richard Hayes is well aware of who got the attention on the Lakes High School offensive line last year.
"Dan Ronsman," Hayes said.
Ah, Dan Ronsman. The peanut butter and jelly eating machine who turned that high-fat diet into a Division I scholarship (University of Akron).
Hayes, a junior, took a page out of Ronsman's prescription for success book. During his sophomore season, he weighed 200 pounds. Now aided by four protein shakes and eight peanut butter and jellies, Hayes will play Division I football following his senior season. He has agreed on a full-ride scholarship to play football at Northern Illinois University.
"I'm very excited," Hayes said. "A lot of people wanted me to hold out for a bigger school but I liked the coaches and program at Northern."
Lakes coach Luke Mertens is a graduate of Northern Illinois.
"He is big, strong and very aggressive," Mertens said. "He liked the idea of committing early so he can now focus on his upcoming senior year."
Hayes didn't play football until he came to high school.
"Friends said I should go out for it," Hayes said. "I liked it a lot. It's a chance to hurt people -- legally."
