Derrick Favors has Memphis among his favorites and is among the Top 5 Juniors to be in the nation. Calipari and the staff are making him a top priority among big's in the class of 2009. He's out of Atlanta, Ga and is 6-9 215 and a super athelete. With our ties to former Atlantians like Rice and Dozier, we might be able to land him.
The Tigers are currently on the Rivals lists of 8 out the top 40 players in the Class of 2009:

No. 2 Xavier Henry. Battle among Kansas, Memphis, and North Carolina for him.

No. 5 Derrick Favors. Still wide open, but he consistently mentions the Tigers.

No. 11 Leslie McDonald. Coveted local recruit. Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and others are already making a big push. Like Elliot Williams, everybody in the country may end up offering him. Would be a big get for the Tigers.

No. 13 Nolan Dennis. Don't know much about him, but he has started mentioning the Tigers.

No. 28 Shawn Williams. Liked Memphis last year, but seems to be looking elsewhere now.

No. 34 Durand Scott. Many Big East and ACC teams are pursuing him. Kemba Walker was just the first of many NYC players the current coaching staff may end up having a shot at.

No. 39 Noel Johnson. Another Atlanta-area player who often mentions the Tigers. Cal has really established a presence in Georgia basketball circles.

No. 40 Ferrakhan Hall. Has the Tigers on his list, but is reportedly a Georgia Tech lean.

As usual, Cal has plenty of possibilities, and those eight will likely be supplemented by another eight or so.

Add one more to that list. DeMarcus Cousins said this today. "There are a lot of schools that I want to visit and talk to their coaches. I'm not prepared to cut my list down at all, I have plenty of time for that," Cousins said. "Alabama, UAB, Memphis, Kentucky, UConn, Florida and Duke are some that I like. I think they are a great start but there will be more I want to look at I'm sure. Also, there could be changes at those schools the next couple of years that could knock them off the list."

Dennis A Hot Commodity
By Shay Wildeboor – Rivals.com

Bill Self is currently recruiting a number of talented players from the 2009 class. Nolan Dennis, the 6-foot-5, 170-pound shooting guard from Richland High School in North Richland, Texas, is one player that appears to be showing serious interest in Kansas. Jayhawk Slant spoke to Dennis, a five-star prospect, about his recent rise in the rankings and where his recruitment stands at this time.

"I am pretty much wide-open right now," said Dennis. "I am interested in any school that is willing to recruit me. Kansas is a school that I am looking at right now. I really like Kansas because of the tradition, the fans and the style of play. I've seen some staff members from Kansas watching me this spring.

"A visit to Kansas could happen, but it's really too early to tell," he added. "I am really wide-open right now and I am interested in any school that's willing to recruit me. I'm not in a rush to make any decisions about my recruitment."

Dennis, the No. 13 ranked player in the class of 2009, made a name for himself during the spring AAU Circuit. After being somewhat of an unknown heading into the spring, the five-star prospect has emerged as one of the most talented players in the class.

As it stands right now, Arkansas (offer), Baylor (offer), Cincinnati (offer), Indiana (offer), Iowa State, Kansas, Marquette, Memphis, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State (offer), Stanford, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas-Arlington (offer) are showing the most interest in Dennis at this time.

Dennis, who will spend the spring and summer running with the Dallas Mustangs, spent a few minutes talking to Jayhawk Slant about his sudden rise in the rankings and the overall development of his game.

According to Dennis, he still has plenty of room for improvement.

"My name is getting out there because of my play so far this year," said Nolan. "I think that I can do a lot better, so I will continue to work hard. I would say that my biggest strength is my ability to do everything. I feel that I'm a very versatile player.

"My ball handling and my strength are two areas of my game that I need to improve," he added. "My ball handling and my strength are probably my two biggest weaknesses at this point. I am going to continue to work on all areas of my game and I will continue to improve as much as I can. I can still become a much better player."

Three top 35's a year Cal. That's all we ask.
My top choices for 2009 class would be in this particular order...

1.Derrick Favors
2.Xavier Henry
3.Leslie McDonald
How good is the kid from Harding Academy that's in this class? I don't even know his name but understand he was hurt this year. A Harding homer spoke well of him and thinks he's high D-1...don't know a thing about him personally, though.

I have a feeling that you are speaking of Marlon Brown (WF 6-5/190) with Memphis (TN) Harding Academy and 16&U Mid-State Ballerz. I don't know a whole lot about him. Easterwood is probably a VERY good source for this question.

Here's a little blurb about him from the CA:
Marlon Brown Mention in CA
Quote:Coach 'O' first to offer Harding's Brown

Harding Academy sophomore football and basketball standout Marlon Brown hadn't even heard the entire question Wednesday when he broke out into laughter.

"Hilarious," answered the 6-5, 200-pound Brown, recalling a phone conversation he had last Thursday night with Ole Miss head football coach Ed Orgeron.

"The way he talks is just funny. He was like, 'Marlon, I want to offer you a scholarship,' point blank. At first I was like, 'Uh, OK.' But after I hung the phone up and let it process, I could not believe he just offered me a scholarship."

A sophomore wide receiver and defensive back, Brown caught 41 balls for 780 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He also registered 42 tackles and two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.

"What I'm glad to see is people have already taken notice of him," first-year Harding football coach Ryan Derrick said. "He's just a great kid, and that's what's so exciting about it.

"This isn't going to go to his head. You know sometimes you worry about a younger guy being satisfied once he starts getting this attention, but that's not his personality at all. I think it's just going to fuel him to get better and better."

Brown, who indicated Wednesday he's leaning right now toward a career in basketball, averaged 16.4 points for Harding's basketball team in 25 games this season before injuring his meniscus and missing the rest of the year. Derrick said Brown has totally recovered from the injury.

"He's already been cleared. I walked in the gym and he was throwing down a 360, two-handed dunk the other day," Derrick said. "He's always been a basketball kid. I think football is a newer passion for him for sure. He's a basketball-first kid, but, you know, 6-5 receivers don't come along very often.

"I just think his potential in football is unlimited, but I also think he's going to be able to make his choice about what he wants to do."

I have seen a mention of his name in a Top 100 of 2009, but it was a very obscure listing. From looking at the rankings, it appears accurate when comparing the Top 25 to other listings (such as Rivals).

who is the local Nike guy who is a MCS graduate and I think a Memphis grad? I'm thinking Wooten, so I'm wondering if Gregg Wooten is his son.

As an aside, in trying to find the answer to my question, I stumbled on Nike's board of directors. Alan Graf happens to be on there. Suprising we haven't been formally converted to a Nike school, but I guess he's giving Cal his operating room.
never mind on my question. Willie Gregory is who I was thinking of.
