Quote:BYU: The only mid-major in the modern era to snag a national championship. Bronco Mendenhall has the program back up to near-LaVell Edwards standards.

TCU: At least 10 wins in five of the past seven seasons. Three different conferences, eight bowls since 1996. This program knows how to win, or at least search for conferences where it can win. Gary Patterson is the best coach not at a BCS school.

Boise State: The Fiesta Bowl was the pinnacle (for now) of an amazing 11-year existence in Division I-A. The Broncos have thrived through coaching turnovers (six since 1996), a small stadium (30,000-seat Bronco Stadium) and isolation in Idaho. The WAC is now too small for this burgeoning powerhouse.

Northern Illinois: Joe Novak lost 34 of his first 37 games in DeKalb. Four years later, the Huskies were challenging for a BCS bowl berth. Entering his 12th season, the dean of MAC coaches always seems to have NIU in the MAC race.

Toledo: Since he arrived in 2001, Tom Amstutz has guided the Rockets to two MAC titles and three West Division titles. A gambling scandal has stained the program lately, but none of it will stick to Amstutz, who should be at a major conference school.
Yep 2 of the top 5 in the MAC, that says quite a bit about this conference considering the MWC, CUSA and WAC outspend the MAC.
Nice to see the MAC mentioned, but what about Central?
Uh the next time central is a POWERHOUSE please tell me. Heck Miami'd be in the top 10.
Toledo and NIU have been consistant. But what have they done lately?

Uh who said anything about a POWERHOUSE? They had a good season last year and are expected to have another very strong season this year.

CMU had a very good year last season, but look again at the list above. Those teams have had more than one good season in the last 5-10 years.

NIU has won four MAC West titles in the last 6 seasons, has seven consecutive winning seasons, and has participated in two bowl games in the past 3 years.

NIU and Toledo are the only two teams in the MAC to have a top 25 winning percentage in the nation since 2000.
Dennis Dodd is good to the MAC. Too bad the conference hasn't returned that favor and really grown.

I also think leaving Navy off the list is an error. Right now the Middies are as consistently competitive as any MAC or MWC team.

2005-06 UT Won the GMAC Bowl 45-13 and finished #26 in the Final AP Poll.

03-shhhh
The AP poll only goes to 25. Toledo and 94 other teams didn't make it.

Toledo had the highest number of AP votes after #25 University of California.A total higher than the University of Michigan Wolverines.Nobody else in the MAC got any.Sound better?:youmoron:
Just curious. How many MAC titles has Novak won at the helm at NIU?
And three of the top five game day coaches are former MAC coaches.

Five best game day coaches sponsored by Depends

Jim Grobe (Ohio)
Urban Meyer (BGSU)
Nick Saban (U Toledo)

Bob Stoops
Jim Tressel (Who? Never heard of him)

There's more to success than winning a MAC Title. Fresno State has a great program but no WAC titles under their current coach. That does not mean it is not important to NIU fans as many have used no MAC Titles as reasoning to bash Joe Novak. To many, including me, winning the MAC is our #1 priority. However, Novak has built a great program. 2003 and 2004 NIU squads were ranked top 30 in the nation, four wins over BCS programs since 2002, multiple MAC West titles, bowl bids, national recognition, a couple of Heisman candidates, lots of televised games, NFL players, the new athletic facility (Yordon Center), etc. Heck, it's May and we already have our first '08 football verbal. Novak has accomplished many great things.

That's nice, but it doesn't mean a thing until the ink is dry on the LOI as we have probably all lost verbals along the way.

=>This is a list of programs, not teams who had a good year last year.

Miami actually would have to be up there. Historically, Miami has the best football program in the MAC. Of non-BCS programs, Miami is #1 and #2 is most wins and winning %. Miami has the most MAC titles. Until last year's free fall, Miami has 11 or so straight winning seasons. In 2003, Miami finished in the AP Top 10 after going 13-1.

Obviously, looking at the "current" Top 5 Non-BCS programs, you have to look beyond one year (which eliminated CMU), but not exactly look at the whole history of the program (otherwise Miami is easily the best in the MAC). A window of the last 10-15 years is fair in determining the best "current" program. As such, Toledo easily gets the nod as tops in the MAC. As for #2, Miami and NIU each have legit arguments as to who is second fiddle of the conference in the last 10-15 years.

BUGS would be 4th. Akron probably would be a very, very distant 5th.

Understandable, but i don't see this guy going anywhere. He seems pretty sincere in wanting to be at NIU. He was being told to wait for bigger offers and he chose not to. He even knew CMU was going to offer the next day and still verballed to NIU instead of waiting. But yes, your response can be "but you never know" or "you can't say that with certainty". That's just my assessment. Last year's '07 class had one defection along the way. We had a LB from Wisconsin who verballed in August of '06 (maybe earlier) and then a few weeks before Signing Day he switched his committment to Northwestern.
