Bill Haas, Cortland Lowe and Brent Wanner to compete in national tournament later this month

Aug. 9, 2002

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Three members of the Wake Forest men's golf team, Bill Haas, Cortland Lowe and Brent Wanner, have qualified for the 102nd U.S. Amateur Championship, which takes place Aug. 19-25 at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Lowe and Wanner are rising seniors at WFU, while Haas will be a junior on next year's squad.

All three Deacons earned a berth in the U.S. Amateur through top finishes at 36-hole sectional qualifying tournaments over the past couple of weeks. Wanner, from Chatham, Mass. tied for second (144) at Charles River Country Club in Boston. Lowe, who hails from Augusta, Ga., finished third (138) at Willow Creek Golf Club in Knoxville, Tenn. Haas, from Greer, S.C. won the qualifier at Statesville Country Club in Statesville, N.C., shooting a 133.

The U.S. Amateur Champion is decided by both stroke play and match play. Participants compete in two rounds (36 holes) of stroke play. The top 64 players after those two rounds advance to match play. Each round of match play consists of 18 holes until the finals, which is decided after 36.

The U.S. Amateur champion receives, among other awards and exemptions, an invitation to play in next year's Masters Tournament.

Way to represent! It would be very special if one of these guys could win the Amateur & we'd be following them at the Masters next year. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="cool.gif" />
