GAME RECAP...
North Carolina State gambled with a two-point conversion attempt
in overtime as Jamie Barnette connected with Torry Holt to give
the Wolfpack a 32-31 upset of 16th-ranked Syracuse in the first
meeting between the schools since 1978.

Each team scored on its first possession of overtime. Donovan
McNabb hit tight end Roland Williams with an 18-yard touchdown
pass to give Syracuse (1-1) a 31-24 lead, but North Carolina
State responded when Tremayne Stephens scored on a one-yard run.

It was expected that North Carolina State (1-0) would attempt
the extra-point to tie the game, but Wolfpack coach Mike O'Cain
opted for the two-point conversion. Syracuse coach Paul
Pasqualoni was frantically motioning for his players to call
timeout, but was unable to and watched Barnette loft the winning
pass to a wide-open Holt in the end zone.

"A gutsy call? I believe it was a confident call," said O'Cain.
"You got to go for two at some point. I felt that was the right
time. They were on their heels."

"I would have liked to have gotten a timeout, just to discuss
the two-point attempt," said Pasqualoni. "We made too many
mistakes to win."

"We were set when they hiked the ball," said Syracuse defensive
lineman Jason Walters. "We knew what our responsibilites were."

Syracuse had a golden opportunity to win the game in regulation,
but redshirt freshman Dee Brown fumbled on third down at the
N.C. State 2-yard line and cornerback Tony Scott recovered for
the Wolfpack with 20 seconds remaining.

"We knew what we had to do and everybody kept their heads up,"
said Barnette. "At the end of regulation, we were just praying
on the sideline for the defense to come up with some kind of
play and give us a chance to win."

Barnette's nine-yard pass to tight end Mark Thomas tied the game
at 24-24 with 4:33 left in regulation.

Barnette passed for 279 yards and three touchdowns with one
interception and Holt had five receptions for 125 yards and two
touchdowns. Barnette connected with Holt on scoring plays of 37
and 18 yards and also hit tight end Mark Thomas with a nine-yard
touchdown.

"From day one in August he (Barnette) took charge of our
football team," said O'Cain. "He deserves tremendous credit.
The thing that Jamie did was he kept us together. He never lost
his poise."

Syracuse's Quinton Spotwood scored on a 72-yard punt return and
caught six passes for 155 yards and a touchdown.

Syracuse star quarterback Donovan McNabb, who was 11-of-14 for
211 yards in the Kickoff Classic last week, completed 12-of-26
passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns.

"It's the biggest win in my head coaching career," said O'Cain.
"You come in here and you play toe-to-toe against one of the
best football teams in the country, it gives us a tremendous
adrenaline boost."

McNabb hit Spotwood with a 68-yard touchdown pass off a fake
option 22 seconds into the game and Brown scored on a one-yard
run with 4:52 left in the first quarter to give Syracuse a 14-0
lead.

A 32-yard field goal by Chris Hensler and a 37-yard scoring pass
from Barnette to Holt in the second quarter pulled N.C. State
within 14-10.

Nathan Trout's 39-yard field goal with 3:10 left in the quarter
gave Syracuse a 17-10 halftime advantage.

Barnette's 18-yard scoring pass to Holt with 19 seconds
remaining in the third quarter tied the game at 17-17.

Syracuse reclaimed the lead on Spotwood's electrifying punt
return. Spotwood fielded the punt on one bounce at the Syracuse
27, raced backwards six yards to the 21 and turned the corner
down the right sideline for a 73-yard touchdown.

N.C. State then embarked on a 10-play, 78-yard drive which
resulted in Barnette's touchdown pass to Thomas.

Syracuse scored on three plays in its overtime possession.

N.C. State kept its overtime drive alive when Barnette scrambled
for 10 yards on a 4th-and-7 to the Syracuse 2-yard line. One
play later, Stephens scored on a one-yard run.

N.C. State leads the all-time series, 5-0.

And now we are 6-0 against them. It really is a pleasure to beat them.
