ALRIGHT.

Windows ME has got to go.

I could whipe myself, unscrew the back panel in the cpu tower, throw in the toilet paper - and STILL make better use of a computer's hardware.

Would a OS-Knowledgeable person please advise me which OS would be a good option to look over?

Note: Windows ME, Windows XP, Macintosh are OUT of the question.
XP Blows....

If you want to stay with a MS OS, go with Windows 2000 professional. Rock Solid, Nice OS..

I have it up on my ftp server.. just grab it, burn it, and load it up!!

or...

you could go get Suse Linux 7.3 and start getting the feel for a hardcore network operating system.

with XInterfaces like KDE and GNOME, the OS really does feel pretty good these days, and your box will get more out of its resources, never crash, and you may begin to learn the highly marketable skill sets of UNIX administrator or developer.

I dunno... have XP Pro and haven't crashed it yet, and unlike 2000, will run my Radeon videocard.
I've been running XP since October and have only crashed it once when I had a virus that created a 40gig temp file on my HD other than that I love XP...

But what do I know I'm just a stupid Software Test Engineer..
I don't like Window's ME, I love XP though! It's what my parents have, I like the idea that i have my own desktop!
We had Windows 2000 advanced server running Resin for our dev environment. It was up for 3 months without a reboot...pretty stable!

Linux is much more lightweight...but I'm a novice. FWIW: I Installed(Mandrake) on one of my home machines a couple of weeks ago & it runs really well(and really lean).
Just go to www.mandrake.com and download the ISO images for Mandrake Linux 8.2

There's three CDs. Burn them, and install.

This comes with kOffice, which has all your MS office functions. Gimp, the Linux Photoshop, and lots of other stuff.

You can also download a TON of free software off the internet, like Star Office, Sun's office suite, very nice.

Mandrake is by far the BEST operating system for a home user, and is widely known as the beginners Linux.
one more thing, why the animosity towards macs? Mac OS X is the best operating system today, period. You can compile open source software on it, you can run unix software, you can run mac software, and there's enough bells and whistles to make you go deaf. Anyone who hasn't used OS X is missing out, I just can't wait until I have enough money to buy another computer so I can get a Mac. (BTW, a Mac at 1 GHz sells for about $800 these days and is more powerful than a PC at 1.7 Ghz, and most of those sell for $1k)
