I hate to reply to my own post but I just figured out why they used this pic. Because Duke did not play in the National Championship game this year so ESPNDOOK did not even bother covering the event so they had/have no pics from this past years Championship Trophy presentation... Because they weren't there...

I wonder if there was a big controversy about how "impractical" a basketball playoff would be before they instituted the NCAA tournament.

No, the reason why they used that picture for a BCS article is because Dook Football is so disgraceful that they wouldn't shame their precious website with a photo of the team... that and duke football has not won a Bowl in a very long time. So, of course they have to post an outdated picture of the bball team.
