FSU's Teresa Bundy Wins National Title In Women's Triple Jump At 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

June 2, 2002

BATON ROUGE, La. - Florida State senior Teresa Bundy (Cleveland, Ohio) won the first individual national title for the Lady Seminoles' track and field team since 1987, when she triple jumped 44-00.00 (13.41m) Saturday night in Baton Rouge, La. Bundy beat out Wichita State freshman Ineta Radevica, by one inch, on her final attempt of the evening. Bundy, along with freshman teammate Natalie Hughes (Grand Junction, Colo.), scored enough points to place the women 22nd at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.

The only other Lady Seminole to triple jump 44-plus feet was school record holder Esmeralda Garcia, who won the national crown in 1985.

Hughes became the first ever Lady Seminole to earn All-America honors in the 1,500-meter run. She finished eighth in the championship final and was second among freshman. Hughes' time of 4:18.27 broke the school record, which stood since 1985 at 4:18.56.

The men's team, which won its first ACC outdoor title this season, finished tied for 44th. Senior Shawn Brown (Brandon, Fla.) placed 12th in the high jump with a mark of 7-00.25 (2.14m). Brown will leave FSU as one of the most accomplished high jumpers in school history, amassing three All-America accolades (2001-indoor and outdoor, 2002-outdoor) and an ACC title (2001 outdoor) in only two seasons as a Seminoles after transferring from USF.

In total, the Seminoles had five All-Americans at this year's NCAA meet, which are the most combined All-Americans since 1997 when FSU had seven earned the honor. The 2002 FSU All-Americans are Kim Jones (Greensboro, N.C.) in the women's long jump, Lacy Janson in the women's pole vault, Mario Lowe (Lithonia, Ga.) in the men's triple jump, Bundy and Hughes. The Lady Seminoles' four All-Americans are the most since the 1997 season, which had six, including two relays.
