How are we "cocky SOBs"?

How?

Did you see/hear his interview on the Jim Rome show? He was very, very humble and talked about how we're undefeated, but we still have a long ways to go etc....

Just because Dahntay is emotional and exciting makes him cocky?
Duke wins 104-93.

JJ goes off for 34.

Duke goes 35-38 from the line. :D :D
And all was well in the world, as Rat-Face ascended to the top of the "most hated and feared coaches" list, yet again.

That's what I'm happy about. :)

No, because he taunts opposing players when he's out on the court....

Dahntay does need to calm it down a little bit on the court.

And that is cocky because...

taunting/talking sh!t isn't cocky, that's part of the game, and chances are the guy he's talking to is talking crap right back at him.
He didn't earn the name "Tauntay" for nothing.

nate jonesacc Wrote:WTF? Wake up dude. Do you not watch college basketball? You might want to take a look at Doh taunting the refs, Coach K doing it, players taunting each other, the refs, etc.... IT IS a part of the game.
I don't think you understand the definition of "taunting" here. Arguing and taunting are different things. Please point out an instance of Doh "taunting" the refs... or Coach K, for that matter.

And my point was not that it doesn't occur in college basketball. It was that it SHOULD NOT occur in college basketball. Your previous post mentioned that taunting is not cocky -- that it's part of the game. I'm not trying to put words in your mouth, but it sounds to me like you are accepting it as "part of the game." I do not.

Another thing: trash talk and taunting can co-exist, but they are two separate entities... and I see the latter as far worse than the former. Trash talk can be harmless and "just a part of the game" (as you put it). I don't particularly like it, but I don't think it takes away from the game. Taunting is a different matter. Taunting refers to things like Christian Laettner's stomp on the Kentucky player way back when, or when Jay Williams' tried to show up the Boston College player with his dribble. And yes, I will admit that UNC players have been guilty of it in the past too (I'm quite sure that Makhtar Ndiaye did some of it when he was here). It has no place in the game whatsoever.

Doh taunting the refs? At the end of the Miami game, when he walked over to the ref and almost pulled a Mike Davis. What he said beats me, but it sure looks like he was trying to provoke a reaction from the ref, which constitutes taunting in my book.

What about Doh taunting our cheerleaders? Is he now cocky? Classless? An idiot?

I can agree that a certain level of taunting has no place in the game at all. But petty taunting like Dahntay does is just part of the game.

Once again, that is not "taunting."

The defintion of taunt, according to webster.com:

"to reproach or challenge in a mocking or insulting manner: jeer at
synonym see RIDICULE"

You are confusing arguing with taunting. Heck, not even Mike Davis was taunting in that huge spectacle that he put on.

(By the way, since you mentioned it, Davis' antics were far worse than what Doherty did. Doherty argued for like five seconds -- albeit vehemently -- and then let it go. The game was over, so he had the right to campaign for a foul or at least voice his displeasure over a very questionable call. But, as I said, he only gave a few seconds of argument over it... and he was even complimentary of the refs in his postgame comments.)

Now, you are a little closer with the Doherty-cheerleader comments. However, a taunt (as I see it, although I agree that this isn't in the Webster definition) is when you ridicule someone right in front of them. Doherty's dook cheerleader comments were not made for the public to hear. It was ridicule -- yes -- but it was not "taunting." You might even think it was "classless" (although I do not)... but it was definitely not "taunting." It was meant as only a small joke to lighten the mood for the players in the Carolina huddle. And it worked.
