Per SDSundevil's request, I've tracked down the recap/stats from the 1970 Peach Bowl. Since the Sun Devils and Heels play this season, hopefully this will start some discussion on the upcoming game this season.

December 30, 1970
Atlanta, Ga. (If I'm not mistaken, this was played at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta. FYI, most games back in the '70s were, then it was moved to Fulton Co. Stadium)

The Tar Heels exploded for 26 second quarter points but couldn't hold off Arizona State in the final two quarters as the Sun Devils rallied for an exciting 48-26 victory.

Carolina spotted unbeaten ASU 14 points on a pair of touchdowns runs, from eight and 33 yards, by Bob Thomas.

Don McCauley got the Tar Heels on the scoreboard with a one-yard plunge set up by a long pass from Paul Miller to Ricky Lanier. ASU scored on its next series, though, on a 67-yard TD catch by J.D. Hill.

Carolina then scored the final three touchdowns of the first half to go into the intermission with a 26-21 lead. First, Miller passed 37 yards for a score to Tony Blanchard. Then McCauley rushed in from 17 yards out. And finally, the All-America McCauley scored again from four yards.

Arizona State dominated a second half which was played in a heavy Atlanta snowstorm and without Miller, who left with an injury.

Monroe Ely scored twice and Thomas reached the end zone for the third time in the Sun Devils' 27-point second half.

In his final game as a Tar Heel, McCauley gained 143 yards on 36 carries.

No offense to you JJ, but I really don't think you're going to find many on this board who want to talk about that game.

It was over thirty years ago, and it was a loss to a team that's not considered a close rival. Sure, we play them this year -- but I don't think you'll be hearing too many cries of revenge or reminiscing about that game....

It's got a better shot of being read over here than on the ASU board (although I pulled a CougarReggie and posted it over there too ). Plus, a little feather ruffling might keep this board stirred up.

What's interesting is I found the boxscore on TarHeelBlue.com. I can't understand why they have it archived.

Now, my idea of a more useful thread would be a flashback to the Miami of Ohio game in 1998. Even though we lost that one too, that was more recent and you better believe we're looking for revenge in that one....

DM was the man.......I loved watching him run.
If I remember correctly, Ricky Lanier played quarterback and one point in his career. I may be mistaken. I remember hearing some of the linemen laughing about playing "Run, Ricky, Run" (and sometimes a less kind name for the game). They would let the opposing defensive players thorough just so they could watch Ricky run around in the backfield. He would run about fifty yard, almost all behind the line of scrimmage trying to get away. Sometimes, he'd even gain a yard. It was sad.

I just thought it would be interesting to see the stats, the game was so long ago many don't remember it, I thought it was impressive that the Devils were able to win in the snow in a hostile environment. This years game is very exciting as both teams have many unknowns going into the season, and they are not familiar with each other. I would like to see more Pac Ten/ACC matchups, these are two conferenes that rarely seem to play.
