Full Version: Thoughts on the UNC win over Duke

-Duke made two critical mistakes early. The guards should have made it their personal goals to give the ball to Shelden on EVERY trip downcourt. He was unstoppable and should have been used earlier. Secondly, Duke should have gone to the zone a long time before the last 5 minutes. UNC didn't know how to play against it and looked discombobulated.
-Shelden Williams is going to be a monster in the ACC in the future. Look out for him.
-Felton is outstanding. He led the Heels tonight and deserves a hell of a lot of respect.
-McCants was unstoppable. I still don't know why Dahntay wasn't guarding him.
-The scuffle - It's very clear as to what happened. Doherty went over to look after Felton, who just got hurt. While he was there, he was reeming out the refs. Chris Collins came over and starting giving Doh! hell, and Doh retaliated by "pushing" Collins with his stomach. It was basically a bump. Then, Andre Buckner pushed Doh! Doh flung his arms at Buckner, but I don't know if he made contact. K, Wojo and Doh all tried to break it up after that. Of those involved the classy ones were K, Wojo, UNC assistants and Felton. The others (Doh!, Collins, the rest of the bench both teams) were the ones at fault.
-The fans were crazy. I haven't heard the Dean Dome that loud in a long time.
-UNC has clinched an NIT bid, but won't make the NCAA barring an ACC championship.
-Dahntay's shot was definitely late, but the fact that he hit it proves yet again that this rivalry has something special to it.
-This loss doesn't hurt as much as I thought it would. We don't match up well with UNC, and they always play well with a chip on their shoulder.
-I hope we play UNC again. I think K knows, and he should know, what he needs to do to beat them.
-Duke needs to get to the ACC championship game to get a 3 seed.

That's all I have to say. I bet by the time I've finished writing this there are 200 flames on this board.
I agree with you on shelden. Jokes aside, he will be a scary competitor in the years to come. Hopefully, he'll stick around for a while.

The scuffle was weird, but i think that the rivalry really fueled it more than anything.

Felton/Mccants is a scary backcourt, nuff said.

Jones was an offensive machine, expect him to be 1st team all acc.

Duhon had a decent night, but he has to build his confidence, he isn't hitting his 3s.
-Duhon needs to take the outside shots more. He's too good not to.
-Shelden Williams was awesome tonight.
-McCants had a great game.

Another note: Duke and UNC will play in the ACC tournament if UVA loses to Maryland
from tarheelblue.com

"The game grew ugly with 8:17 left and the score tied at 63.

Felton was bloodied when he took an elbow on a follow shot by Jones. He was being helped to his feet by North Carolina coach Matt Doherty near the Duke bench when Blue Devils assistant coach Chris Collins began to jaw with Doherty.

Duke senior reserve guard Andre Buckner then came out of the huddle and pushed Doherty with two hands to the chest. Doherty went back at Buckner and both teams began pushing and shoving as the officials tired to restore order.

Doherty and Jones exchanged words in the first meeting at Cameron Indoor Stadium after Jones made a basket and passed the North Carolina coach on the sideline. "
I only saw the last 3 minutes. I taped it and will watch later. Jones is a hell of a player. Our freshmen are special.

I guess people see what they want to see eh?

As a Terp fan and noted Tarhole hater, please allow me to offer my opinion as to waht I saw on replay.

Dahntay (sp? whatever....Im so used to Tauntay that I forget how to spell his name correctly) hustles for a loose ball, looks to push off with his left hand, but Felton is farther away than Jones thinks and he lets a fingernail loose on Felton's lip. He scores, Felton lays prone and looks hurt. Doh rushes over, shows the bloody jersey to the ref and screams about the no-call. Meanwhile McCants is talking trash to the duke bench and Collins gets all hot and bothered and gets in McCants face. Doh sees this and rushes forward and Andre Buckner gets all badass and pushes Doh. Cooler heads prevail from the head coaches and all players are bustled away except for McCants whom Krazooski hugs and talks to (was he telling him he had angelic eyes? )

anyway...does that sound about right?
That's what it looked like from the 3rd part view

That seems pretty fair, but I didn't see McCants talking crap to Collins or the rest of the Duke bench. I think the Collins/Doh! incident sparked it all.
My thoughts:

:D :) 04-cheers 03-razz

The rivalry is back.

I have no voice.

I am trembling with excitement.

I stormed the court.

Our players are nasty good.

Finally: 82-79 Go to Hell Duke!

:D 04-cheers 03-razz :) :drink: :D 04-cheers

P.S. Should I TP Nate's house? :drink: :D 03-wink
duke doesn't have to win the ACC tourney to get a three seed nate.
Nate, I really have to take exception to the Sheldon is going to be anything special. I think he will be good, but he wont be a world beater IMHO. He got away with a lot of time in the lane camping out. The majority of his points came on dunks. When Noel took him, he looked average at best. If he had to put the ball on the floor, he ended up taking some terrible shots. The one time he did hit, he hooked our guy and went around him. Could have been a call, but was at best a no call. I know you see things differently, but I guess that will always be the case. I plan to watch the game again today (home with a sick son, mom out of town) and I will make sure I am right about the 3 second no calls. As far as the "confrontation" I think the refs handled it well. Buckner should have stayed on the bench, but the Testosterone was flowing. Heat of the battle and all that. I dont think Jones did anything wrong. He just happened to catch Felton's lip. Fortunes of war. I still think Duhon is afraid of failure. He wont take the shot from outside when the game is on the line. He will drive to the hoop and shoot, but wont take a 3.
I just hope we do well in the ACC tourney. We shall see.

Ok, I looked at the first half again to see what Sheldon did.
First posession of game for Duke. Airball by Shel from about 5 feet.
16:40 mark misses 3 ft bank shot
gets abused by Felton on other end
12:40 mark,,,,,had been in lane for 4 seconds when he gets ball which Duhon lost, took 4 steps and made 5 footer.
12:27 dunk. good position, bad d on us.
I just realized who(what) Horvath looks like. A Unicorn without the horn.
11:10 mark. He was in the lane for 6 seconds before the ball was lost.
Lay in at 10:40 mark. Good position.
9:33 mark. Double teamed 3 ft from basket, threw up garbage, got fouled.
6:30 mark spin move right and misses 7 ft shot.
6 min mark, throws up junk from 6 ft. another miss.
3:50 mark-hits 4 ft bank shot
other end, no d on McCants-any kind of head fake gets him off his feet.
2:45 throws up wierd rt hand hook which rolls out
McCants abuses him at 2:35 mark
1:39 mark, in lane--Duhon shoots at 1:34...

That is the first half. I only did this to back up what I said. Not to tear him down. He is a good player. I just think you get someone who can play d, and he wont get the dunks. He throws up a lot of bad shots. He is a liability on d. Any kind of head fake and he is lost. I will check out the second half later. BTW, the times are as close as I can get them. I dont have cable. Some of the time the clock was not real clear. I would count the seconds when he was in the lane.

Hey Rick, is there any way you can make me a copy of the tape? If so, I can PayPal you the cost of the tape and shipping costs.

I set the game to tape when I left for Chapel Hill on Friday. Much to my dismay, though, I taped ABC and not CBS. :( :bang: Seems to me that the second dook game ever year has always been on ABC in the past. Oh well....

-JD
JD, my copy is not that good. As I said, we do not have cable. Bomber may have a copy, as he has sent me a couple of games this year. If he does not, you may have this copy. Let me know.
Okay, I'll see what he says and go from there. Thanks!

-JD
Rick, there's no doubt that Shelden is not a polished player right now. Yet, under K, he will have great teaching, and he already has the build of an NBA player. He has a 7' + wing span and weighs about 260 of solid muscle. He has to learn better footwork, but that will come in due time. The thing that most impresses me about him is how big and soft his hands are. When I met him and shook his hand, his hand engulfed mine, and I have fairly big hands. He has strikingly similar characteristics of Elton Brand in the way that he has great hands to catch the ball with.

BTW, his defense is solid. He's 3rd in the ACC in blocks.
