Looks like we have dropped 4 recruits from out 2003 list: Major Wingate, Chris Paul (committed to Wake), Kris Humphries, and Darryl Watkins.

Our target list is now down to 10 prospects from the 2003:

Shagari Alleyne
Trevor Ariza
Brian Butch
Ndudi Ebi
Ekene Ibekwe
David Padgett
Leon Powe
Chris Richard
Chris Taft
Reyshawn Terry

Right now the coaches have some decisions to make. I know that we will be giving David Noel a scholarship for his sophmore year, but I don't know how many other scholarships we have.

Chris Paul, a PG target that we were pursuing, committed to Wake. Now the coaching staff must decide if we should recruit another PG from the 2003 class in case Felton leaves after one year. IMO, we should get a point guard from the 2003 class, because if Felton leaves after one year, we will be stuck without a point guard. Think back to what happened when we didn't have a true point guard in the more recent years....we struggled. Some say that we are looking into recruiting a PG prospect named Aaron Brooks, but we will have to see what develops.

We also need some quality big men. Sean May was a HUGE commitment from the 2002 class. But we desperately need some proven players inside, especially some that can play alongside May in the post.

The coaching staff also may look to sign another 2/3 guard from this class such as Trevor Ariza or Reyshawn Terry.

We will have to see what develops, but I have a lot of confidence in our coaching staff when it comes to recruiting, and I believe they will make the do that best job in recruiting for the success of the UNC basketball program. Go Heels!

Surely someone has some comments about this recruiting. Just think, these guys are gonna be the future of UNC basketball <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> !

I've got a couple of observations.

First, I think it's critical for Matt Doherty and UNC that we sign two players out of the top 20 HS prospects, because they must contribute from day 1. Any of the guys on your short list would qualify.

However, we are a long shot for Padgett or Chris Richard, probably also for Ebi and Butch, who only recently became a target. I'm not very familiar with Alleyne and have no idea how we stand with him. If I had a preference here, Padgett would be my #1 choice, Ebi (a great athlete but raw) my #2 as big men from this class.

However, Padgett is a strong Arizona/Stanford lean, with Kansas also ahead of UNC. Richard I think is Florida bound. And we don't lead for Ebi either, as dook, Arizona and Texas seem to be the front runners. I think we may have an outside shot at Butch, but it's another Brad Buckman case - we're in the hunt pretty late.

Ibekwe is interesting but he's not a true center; more of a Jawad-type. He's very raw and at 6-9, 210 would need to bulk up. We do have a shot at him as he doesn't seem to have a favorite.

Terry is also interesting as a combo winger, but that isn't our major need. Likewise Ariza, who is a 3/4 combo, doesn't fill the 4/5 slot we need. And, his shooting is very suspect.

Chris Taft would be another Jawad-type, possibly could play the 5, but he's a long way from qualifying. If we pursue him, we may get another Parker.

I guess I'd like to see us push hard for Padgett and Ebi, but also Butch as a backup. Of course, the danger is that if Butch senses that he's another Adam Boone, a guy we sign only if the first choices go elsewhere, he could commit to Wisconsin or ND early, and then we get nobody.

It won't be easy for Doh & Co. But that's what they get the big bucks for, and they need to deliver.
