this is tough, but i'm gonna go with Mays. if you count Ruth's pitching skills, then him and Bonds would be second.
sorry that i didn't put ted williams in, but i thought he wasn't on the same level as those guys, and then i remembered he lost 5 years to the army.
I think its Babe Ruth. He could pitch and hit and absolutely changed the entire game of baseball.
that's fair, but you could make the case that Ruth only played against white players. Guys like mays had to play as black men in a white man's game. Ruth was an ok baserunner who didn't steal bases, and he was a good fielder with a good/very good arm. While Mays might have been the best fielder and baserunner ever. Also, DiMaggio said Mays had the best arm he'd ever seen.
Walter Johnson
Ruth changed the game and made baseball what it is today.

it's not like there wouldn't have been any HR hit without babe Ruth. Also, the question was the best overall player ever, not the guy who changed the game the most.

the only problem i have with that is Williams. he couldn't run, field or throw. The 5 tools are; hit, hit for power, run, field , throw. Williams was also lucky that he was a lefty in fenway.
Lord, please take Bonds out of there....insult to the others...I am going with Ted Williams.

why do you not think bonds is in the top 10 all time?

why would i take Bonds out? he's top 5 on my list. the only thing he couldn't do was throw, but he made up for that by getting rid of the ball faster than anyone else.
Easy. He is taking illegal supplements. Look at what he looked like back then...and now. Look at how he always praises steriods testing yet baucks when asked to do it and PROVE how he has done this all for himself. His trainer is being idicted on drug charges....give me a break. Take the test or forever be linked Barry.

Those are your five tools, not mine.

You asked who the best player was, obviously we are going to have different interpretations of what that means.
Williams could run and throw. As good as the others? No. But he was still one of the best, if not the best, complete hitters and solid runners
What ever happened to Williams?

Is he still frozen or have they thawed him out yet?

Who knows.

there is no proof that he is taking illegal supplements. Chavlik randolph gained 30 pounds in one offseason. if he can do that, i think bonds can gain 25-30 pounds of muscle in 5 seasons. Also, if he were taking illegal supplements his body would break down, like Caminiti and Canseco, but it hasn't. maybe he's big and great because he works harder than every other player in the league. Ask gary Sheffield.

those drug charges are for his trainer, not him.

innocent until proven guilty.
