Oakland second baseman Mark Ellis will not play this season after tests revealed he has a torn labrum in addition to the separated right shoulder he suffered in a collision with shortstop Bobby Crosby.
Ellis was injured in Oakland's spring training game against the Cubs on Thursday. He was diving for a grounder hit by Sammy Sosa that turned into a go-ahead RBI double.
Backup infielder Frank Menechino is nursing a leg injury, but A's general manager Billy Beane is likely to let Menechino have Ellis' job.
Esteban German also is considered an option to play second.
