I am new to this board. I just wanted to know what everyone's impression on the matter of conference realignment, more specifically when it concerns the ACC.
First of all, some of the teams to "add" on your poll are not realistic. USC, Marshall, and ND come to mind.

You left out a few that are -- Syracuse, BC, and Penn State.

ND won't join the ACC -- if anything, they'd go Big 11.

Marshall is a not a good fit for the ACC. Their sports, other than football, have a long way to go before they could make such a move.

South Carolina isn't going anywhere. And to be frank, they belong in the SEC.
Who voted to kick Duke out of the ACC?

That would have to be one of the moronic sports ideas EVER.

My quote was to add those three schools to the
existing NINE! Split the league into two divisions, and create a "Championship Game" in
football.
I think the ACC should expand. The ACC has great basketball, but can still use some help in Football. ACC Football is good, but kind of thin at the top. Therefore, I'd recommend the ACC to expand with MiamiFl, VT, and WVU. That way the ACC takes a big bite out of its competitor, the Big East. MiamiFl is an obvious add. VT would be a great rival for UVA, MD and the North Carolina schools.

What about WVU? They would be a nice rival in this expanded league for VT and Md, plus they have 50,000+ fan base with a 65,000 seat stadium. I know most fans on these boards seem to push the expand for media markets idea. Rutgers and Boston College just don't draw very well, and they are too far from the ACC schools. Syracuse is better, but still has a geographic problem.

Then who would go in the Big East if Miami, VT, and WVU leave? I would say the top 3 choices would be UofL, UofC, and Marshall. UofL and UofC have the basketball and the markets. Marshall is the best of the rest and a good rival for UofL, UofC, and Pitt.

And if UofL and UofC leave, what happens to CUSA? Divisions will realign into a MidWestern and Southern Conference. Tulsa and La.Tech will join CUSA because of Basketball. Tulsa would go in a "MidWestern" division with Memphis, TCU, Houston, Saint Louis, Marquette, DePaul. LaTech will be in the Southern Division with UNCC, ECU, USF, UAB, Tulane, and USM.

With the WAC losing La.Tech and Tulsa, they go out and add UtahSt, to keep the league at 9. Of course, things could once again change if the MWC decides to expand. And the 15k rule, SanJose St is a likely casualty.

KC
I, for one, am for expansion...to 12 teams!

However...The ACC will never allow Miami to join.

Va Tech and UVA is, already a great rivalry. It would
be in their best interest for the league to expand. They're
playing each other, anyway...might as well be able to
go and find another OOC game.

West Va, will never join without its chief rival Pitt.

The Big East is Big Time Solid at the top with Miami
and Va Tech, but very, very weak at the bottom.
Temple, Rutgers, soon to be UCONN.
Davidson, Furman and Ga Southern.

They'll never get in b/c their football teams clobber most of the conference, their academics are too strong (except for Ga Tech) and their students aren't involved in enough criminal activities.
Really I think the ACC should stay as is but since we're just playing around here. . . Pick up ECU, Central Florida, and Marshall. You get one team that seems to be decent year-in-year-out, one team that can be good when it wants to, and one team that plays tough against some good teams every year but never seems to win 'em.
Not E. Carolina...The Carolina schools wouldn't allow
that. They don't like those people.

Marshall...pitiful in all the other sports.

UCF...could compete in football. Can compete in baseball.
They would allow Florida State and Clemson a team to beat
in basketball.

Seriously...they would have the third largest stadium in the
league. Play ACC home games in the O-Arena...Major
southern newspaper...ACC schools could have an "extra"
in recruiting Florida Athletes...Play once every year in the
state. (FSU and UCF) SEC, couldn't promise that.
In some of your picks for the new ACC teams you're forgetting one vital element.

ACC... ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE

The state the team is in needs to be on the Atlantic coast, so...

Marshall...OUT!
WVU...OUT!
ND...OUT!

Miami is the best choice. Their closest in-conference game right now is VT. There is no good reason for Miami to be where they are now. If they join the ACC their closest games are FSU and GT... right next door... and the bulk of the conference a couple of states up.

Second choice... how bout Syracuse.
Another UCF problem: attendance

They're only getting about 18,000 per home game at the orange bowl

Swagger...you've just answered the problem. The
Orange Bowl is 225 miles south of Orlando. If they
were playing their games at the Citrus Bowl, where they
belong...they'd draw more.

I believe that FSU, Ga Tech, Clemson, et al, would attract
larger home crowds than Toledo...Liberty...Akron. Plus
the ACC teams would bring fans...thousands more than
the schools they are playing...Florida State would bring
30,000 to Orlando...at the minimum...Clemson and
Tech and Carolina...at least 10,000...hell if they drew
5,000 more home fans for those teams...they'd
be drawing 33,000...which is 2,000 more than Groves Seats.
I wouldn't say Marshall is "pitiful" in all other sports. Frankly, they're not THAT bad in basketball. Marshall football would be a great addition to the ACC.

Also, why not add UCF...even though they're struggling in the MAC, they're closer to ACC teams anyway.
