LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky junior guard Antwain Barbour will be sidelined at least five weeks after breaking his left hand in practice Sunday.

Barbour fell on his non-shooting hand and broke his third metacarpal bone, coach Tubby Smith said. The 6-foot-5 Barbour started Kentucky's three games in last week's Maui Invitational and averaged 7.3 points and three assists. It's the same bone that teammate Jules Camara broke in early October.

Barbour transferred to Kentucky (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 15 AP) after two seasons at Wabash Valley (Ill.) Junior College, where he helped lead the Warriors to the 2001 JUCO championship.

The injury leaves Smith with even fewer options in an already depleted backcourt. Junior Cliff Hawkins, who started 29 games last season, is academically ineligible for the first semester.

''It's unfortunate. With Cliff Hawkins still out, it's another experienced player out of our lineup,'' Smith said.

The Wildcats will miss Barbour's athleticism on the wing, especially when they face the Tar Heels -- who proved to be a tough matchup for Kansas and Stanford last week in New York.
