Looks like he'll be sticking around for at least 5 more seasons.

Quote:In an effort to quell speculation about his future at Florida State, football coach Bobby Bowden and his attorney are working with the school on a five-year contract that will keep him at FSU through at least the 2007 season.

Bowden's current deal expires after the 2004 season. Bowden turned 73 last November.

Talks on the new contract have been going on for a while, said Russ Campbell, Bowden's Birmingham attorney, adding that the contract should be completed in early spring. Two factors sped negotiations: Bowden spent an inordinate amount of time at the Sugar Bowl answering questions about his future, and his assistants have been hit with the issue on the recruiting trail this month.

"We just wanted to send a message to Seminole fans and recruits that coach Bowden is not going anywhere," Campbell said. "This time of year in recruiting coaches will say anything to get a competitive advantage. So we thought it was time to step up and make some things clear."

Florida State athletics director Dave Hart was out of the office Thursday and could not be reached. But Campbell confirmed that he had been negotiating with Hart, who has received approval from new FSU president T.K. Wetherell to hammer out a deal.

Bowden, who was on the road Thursday and could not be reached, just completed his 27th year as Florida State's coach. He is 332-96-4 in 37 seasons as a head coach.

Bowden's total compensation is about $2 million per year. He is expected to receive a modest pay increase.
