KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) _ Coretta Brown scored 26 points as ninth-ranked North Carolina rallied from 15 down Thursday night and defeated Western Michigan 79-76.
Nikita Bell scored eight of her 18 points during an 18-4 run by North Carolina that pulled the Tar Heels (16-2) within 63-62 with 7:44 left in the game.
North Carolina pulled ahead for good with 5:44 left when Bell hit a basket for a 68-67 lead. The Tar Heels got up by as many as six points, but Michigan native Jennifer Thomas had a key steal with 10 seconds left to protect North Carolina's three-point edge.
Brown hit 26 points for the second time in four games. She led the Tar Heels in 3-pointers with six.
Casey Rost led Western with 22 points. Western (10-5) scored more points against North Carolina than any team had in regulation this season.
The nation's leading 3-point shooting team, the Broncos hit seven to grab a 43-39 halftime lead. But the team missed 13 of 16 3-point attempts in the second half as North Carolina switched to a zone defense that put more pressure along the perimeter.
North Carolina's La'Tangela Atkinson had a career-high 14 rebounds, as the Heels outrebounded Western 51-30.
