Second-Ranked Florida State Baseball Hosts Evansville
#2 FLORIDA STATE (5-1)
The Seminoles remained No. 2 in this week's Collegiate Baseball poll and
moved up one spot in both of the other polls (up to No. 2 in the Sports
Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll and No. 3 in Baseball America) after taking two
of three from then-No. 3 Stanford. The Seminoles dropped a 2-1 decision
in 12 innings Friday night at Stanford, but bounced back to win Saturday's game 4-3 and Sunday's game 10-8 in another 12-inning affair. On Sunday, Tony McQuade tied the game with a three-run homer in the ninth and Tony Richie had the game-winning RBI with a homer in the 12th. Senior All-American Matt Lynch (2-0) had a strong outing in Saturday's win, allowing just one run in seven innings. FSU's pitching staff has been impressive through six games, compiling a team ERA of 2.41 while opponents are batting just .223.

This weekend's three-game set with Florida State marks the 2003 opening
series for the Purple Aces. Evansville finished the 2002 season 22-33 and eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference. The pitching rotation will be RHP Shaun Williams, RHP Adam Rogers and RHP Andrew Arreola.
THE SERIES
Florida State leads the all-time series with Evansville 1-0. The only meeting between the two schools came in the 2000 NCAA Tallahassee Regional and the Seminoles won by a score of 11-2. FSU piled up 16 hits with Chris Smith, John-Ford Griffin, Marshall McDougall, Scott Boyd and Karl Jernigan each recording multi-hit games. Boyd knocked in five runs and Griffin scored four. Matt Lynch earned his seventh victory as a freshman, allowing two runs over eight innings.
