Seminoles roll over Evansville for the sweep
by Drew Hankin

FSU completed the sweep over Evansville with an 11-1 win on a soggy Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium. The youth movement started to
make their presence known on the diamond, as newcomers Derrick Smith and Daniel Wardell both homered, while Eddie Martinez-Esteve picked up two hits as well. As was the story with the other two games, the Noles had an easy time of it and were able to empty the bench to get other younger players some much needed experience.

Trent Peterson (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, throwing give inning and only giving up three hits without allowing a run. Kevin Lynch, Rhett James, and Daniel Hodges all threw perfect innings to finish out the game, and the only run for Evansville came off of Matt DiBlasi in the eighth inning.

The Seminoles got all the offense they needed in the bottom of the first inning again, when Stephen Drew led off with a triple to left-center and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Jerrod Brown homered for the first time this season to score Tony Richie and gave FSU a 3-0 lead.

Tony McQuade led off the fifth frame with a single to right, and scored on a single by Martinez-Esteve. Tony Richie than blasted his third homerun of the season to give the Noles a 6-0 lead. The final run of the inning came in when Brown doubled and eventually scored when Aaron Cheesman hit into a double play.

Florida State got another big inning in the seventh when Richie led off by reaching on a throwing error, and Daniel Wardell hit his second homerun in two days to put the Noles up 9-0. After Kevin Richmond drew a walk, Derrick Smith launched his first career homerun to give FSU an 11-0 lead.

Evansville's only run came in the next inning when centerfielder Eric Jones singled, advanced to second on a passed ball on Cheesman, and scored on a double down the leftfield line by catcher, Michael Snyder.

With the sweep, the Seminoles moved to 8-1 on the season while Evansville dropped to 0-3. After a week off, FSU hosts Appalachian State next weekend for a three-game series. Marc LaMacchia will rest his arm for the second weekend in a row, so the rotation should be Matt Lynch, Mark Sauls, and Trent Peterson again.
