God help us - Deep Blue Devil Alum may have really been onto something. 03-wink

Per the NY Daily News...

Quote:Commissioner Mike Tranghese - one of the most influential voices in college athletics - is deeply upset about growing reports that the Atlantic Coast Conference - which apparently is looking to expand to 12 teams in order to facilitate a lucrative postseason conference football playoff - is attempting to rip the heart out of his conference by assimilating some of its key members.

According to Tranghese, the ACC has approached four Big East schools - Miami, Virginia Tech, Syracuse and Boston College - in a variety of ways about defecting from the Big East and joining that league.

"I have no use for the ACC right now," Tranghese said yesterday. "They're a bunch of hypocrites. They operate in the dark. They'll never acknowledge this, but I'm aware the ACC for the last couple of years, without ever picking up the phone or calling me, has basically gone out and tried to convince our teams to enter their league.

"They have already made two presentations to the University of Miami - and have been turned down - but they continue to come back, hoping to get the right answer. They've gone to Syracuse, Boston College and Virginia Tech.

"It's a free society. The ACC is entitled to go after another school. Just pick up the phone and tell somebody. Instead, they conduct their business through the press, commissioners, emissaries. I told our presidents I have a great deal of resentment about that. Our presidents at BC, Virginia Tech, Miami and Syracuse are happy. They're satisfied. But the ACC has tried to conquer by dividing. They whisper things to each person. They're trying to intimidate those schools, telling them, 'The Big East will not be a viable conference in the future and you could be left out if you don't come on board.'"

"The ACC, probably more than anybody, has tried to disrupt our conference for a long time. They haven't done it yet. And, as long as I'm here, they're not going to do it."

"This is completely being driven by football," Tranghese said. "It has nothing to do with basketball. The addition will not help them in basketball. It will hurt them. I'd like to know if the ACC has picked up the phone and told Roy Williams or Mike Krzyzewski it was expanding. If they want to compare what they've done and what we've done on the field, be my guest."

I'd take the ACC over the Big Least in a ACC - Big East challenge.
Cuse wouldn't fit, Miami would(football, baseball), Virginia Tech wouldn't(too big of rivals vs. UVA)

Miami vs. FSU isn't FSU's biggest rival, so that would work IMO.
Interesting. Anything to even out the ACC (and the tourney - that play-in game is getting tiresome. Especially since Clemson usually loses in that one).

I'll be surprised if it happens
Add Miami... would do wonders for football, and they're no slouch in basketball either.
You might think Miami would enjoy the move. They are 1200 miles away from the rest of the conference.

Yeah but Washington and Washington St are in the same conference. So are Oklahoma and Okla St. What about Duke and UNC?

Fla. St. is pretty damn far too...

Didn't think of that - good point.
And I'm 100% sure that Maryland is closer to Miami than Syracuse or Boston College is.

Hmmmm, Miami is too our biggest rival. Miami has knocked us out of winning football championships more than Florida ever has or will. I would love it though for Miami to join the ACC. :D

Miami is also our biggest rival in baseball. The Seminoles and Hurricanes play 6 games every year... 3 games in Coral Gables and 3 in Tallahassee.

04-cheers

It'll be interesting to see what happens
I still doubt it will ever happen.

The 'Cuse and BC (and everyone else save Va Tech) know that Miami is the Big East's meal ticket in football. Adding those three into the mix really bolsters the ACC. The only thing I don't like is we'd have to go to two divisions, which means every team wouldn't play every team, which means teams griping about other teams' conference strength of schedule.

IMO, Miami and F$U would have to be on separate sides (even though geographically it would be better if they were in the same division). The four Tobacco Road teams would have to be split evenly. This is my idea...

Division 1:
BC
Syracuse
Miami
Maryland
Carolina
Wake

Division 2:
FSU
Virginia
Clemson
Tech
State
Duke
The reason I don't like expansion is exactly what JJ touched on -- not getting to play every team once a year in football and twice a year in basketball.

I could live with that if our big rivals were put in the same division as us. But, I just can't see how that's possible.

From a merely selfish standpoint, I want to see UNC play dook, State, and Wake every year. There is absolutely no way that UNC could be put in a different division from State or dook. State is our biggest rival in football, and dook is our biggest rival in basketball -- and one of the biggest rivalries in all of college basketball.

Outside of Tobacco Road, UNC and Virginia have the longest football series in the ACC and the fifth-longest in the entire country. Putting those two in different divisions would break that tradition.

So, the only way I'd really be happy with expansion is if UNC, State, dook, Wake, and Virginia were all in the same division.

With all this talk of expansion, it's a shame that Blue Balls is banned.

I think there's too much money involved in the intra-tobacco road games for them ever to be split up. (I hope)

doh
Wow... what a conference that would be.....
