by Drew Hankin

#2 Florida State defeated #13 Clemson 8-1 on Sunday to take the series, and gave skipper Mike Martin his 1,272nd win to move him into eighth place on the NCAA's all-time wins list. Four FSU pitchers combined to limit the Tigers to only one unearned run on six hits, as the Tigers seemed to only be going through the motions on the field.

Daniel Davidson (6-0) picked up the win and tied his career-high with seven strikeouts, including the last five out of six batters. Hunter Jones and Kevin Lynch also saw time on the mound as well as Daniel Hodges, who set an FSU record with his 112th relief appearance, surpassing Zach Diaz.

The Seminoles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Stephen Drew reached on a fielding error, stole second, moved to third on a double-play by Tony McQuade, and scored on a balk.

In the next inning, Jerrod Brown led off with a single to left, and scored on another single to left by Chris Hart. Matt Sauls then doubled to right to score Hart before getting tagged out trying to stretch the hit into a triple.

The Noles continued the trend in the third frame, when Drew led off with a single to right and moved to second on an infield single by Eddy Martinez-Esteve. Drew moved to third on a deep fly ball by McQuade before scoring on a single through the left side by Brown. After Blake Balkcom was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Bryan Zech singled to the second baseman to score Martinez-Esteve, and Brown scored on the Clemson shortstop's second error of the game that gave the Noles a 6-0 lead.

An inning later, the Noles made it 7-0 when Sauls walked, stole second, and scored on a single up the gut by Martinez-Esteve.

After a scoreless fifth inning, FSU scored their final run of the game when Hart doubled down the leftfield line and scored on a single by Sauls to make it 8-0.

Clemson's only run of the game came in the top of the eight inning when secondbaseman David Slevin doubled off of Lynch and pinch-hitter Collin Mahoney reached on a throwing error by Martinez-Esteve before Garrick Evans hit a groundball back to the pitcher that allowed Slevin to score.

Florida State improved to 33-6 and 11-4 in the conference while Clemson fell to 25-9 and 4-5 in the ACC. The Seminoles host Jacksonville on Wednesday at 7:00 pm with the game being televised live on The Sunshine Network.
