Summer Football Primer: Rivers Ready to Rewrite Record Book
Pack signal caller could finish career as ACC leader in several categories.

June 23, 2003

By Tony Haynes

Raleigh, N.C.-Although NC State's much anticipated 2003 football season is still more than two months away, it's never too early consider the overall impact Wolfpack quarterback Philip Rivers will have on his school's and conference's record books by the end of his career. It was on a damp, rainy September night back in 2000 that the Athens, Alabama product aired it out for 397 yards in his first college game against Arkansas State. Thirty-five games and better than 8,000 yards later, Rivers is on the verge of becoming the ACC's all-time passing leader.

With 8,993 career yards to his credit, Rivers needs only 846 passing yards to surpass former Florida State star Chris Weinke, who currently sits on top of the league's career passing list. Weinke, Duke's Ben Bennett, Jamie Barnette of NC State and Duke's Spence Fischer are currently the only quarterbacks in ACC history to have thrown for better than 9,000 yards, a barrier Rivers will likely cross in this year's season opener against Western Carolina.

In an odd statistical twist, Rivers has 8,982 yards of total offense in his career--11 yards less than his total output through the air. Currently standing seventh on the ACC's career total offensive chart, he needs only 1,658 to overtake Georgia Tech's Joe Hamilton, who resides at No. 1 with 10,640 yards.

Weinke's mark of 79 career touchdown passes is also within reach for Rivers, who will head into the 2003 campaign with 61, a figure that currently ranks third on the all-time ACC list.

Oddly enough, despite his remarkable numbers, Rivers has never been named first team All-ACC, nor has he won player of the year honors. He was a runaway choice for the league's rookie of the year award in 2000.

Other Philip Rivers Notes:

81: The number of completions needed to eclipse Bennett's ACC completions mark of 820.
148: The number of passing attempts needed to break Bennett's record of 1,375.
10: The number of times Rivers has thrown for better than 300 yards in a game. Weinke holds the ACC record with 13.
2: The number of 3,000 yard passing seasons Rivers has posted in his career. Bennett and Weinke are the only other ACC quarterbacks that have accomplished that feat.
36: The number of consecutive starts Rivers has made in his career.
