Who here thinks we could use a 5-star SF to replace Shawne Williams and Rodney Carney in this year's class?

I'm guessing everyone just said yes.

Well... hold on to your hats... Sonny Weems may be back in the picture!!

(thanks to Gary Parrish for another timely column)

------------------------------------

Sonny Weems, considered the No. 1 junior college prospect in the nation, must pass an algebra final on Monday or else be denied admission to Arkansas, according to his stepfather, Darrel Levy. Levy said the class is an SEC requirement, and without it, Weems will be forced to reevaluate his future and choose another school.

...

"Some people think Sonny will just drop this class and go to A&M, but that's not true," Levy said. "We believe A&M is a good school and Coach Gillispie is a good guy; We love those guys down there. But there is no truth to the rumor that Sonny is trying to fail this class to go down there. There is actually no truth to the rumor that he has decided to go down there if he does in fact fail this class. It would obviously be an option, but it wouldn't even be our first option."

Asked for the first option, Levy said Memphis.

"I almost called Memphis last week, but I was scared they'd start praying that Sonny wouldn't pass the class," Levy said with a laugh. "But that will be the first number I call."

Ummm, don't study too hard Sonny. lol

WOW!
Is this the other surprise summer addition that Katz was talking about a few weeks ago?

WOW!

If Weems can play the way everyone thinks he can he would be the missing piece to the puzzle. He made no secret about wanting to play for us even after he signed with Urkansas.
Would this effect Randolph joining the 07 class? maybe (probably). Is Weems as good as Rondolph? maybe (probably).

I did NOT see this coming and I certainly want Sonny to go where he wants to go... but I think he may want to go somewhere besides where he was scheduled to go. 02-13-banana 02-13-banana 02-13-banana

Holy moly.... folks, this guy is incredible!

Maybe Katz isn't an know-nothing idiot writer after all.

lmfao

wow... wow... you know, it's really too hot to go to class this week anyway. lmfao
Usually there's no opportunity to use the word serendipity on the internet, but the Taggart, Mack, and (possibly) Weems situations have changed that. Usually it's better to pick an apple rather than wait for one to drop out of a tree; but the way things are going lately, maybe it would be better to stop recruiting regular players, and just wait for top players to transfer, not get into their original school, or decommit at the last second.

Assuming this happens (and that's a very big assumpton, as the coaching staff hasn't had time to react to the situation as well as all the variables on the Arkansas/Texas A&M end), then there would be two questions:

1. Would he play this year, or redshirt? (Answer is probably that he would play this year.)
2. How would they find PT for him? (A nice problem to have, though.)

Weems is an explosive player who would be very similar to Jeff Robinson, Jr.--a high lepaing wing player. Rose, Randolph, possibly Tracy Smith, and now possibly Sonny Weems--pretty exciting possibilities.

There is a gaping hole at the SF position just waiting for him.

Remember, as a juco, he only has two years... maybe just one (seriously) so when Robinson comes, he would only play behind Weems for one season max. 25 minutes for Sonny, 15 for Jeff.... see, it's settled. ;-)
Tiger-tug's quote the other day...

"As usual, Keith is on target. Other people are all over the place. There will be one and possibly two recruits that will surprise everyone."

This may be the one tiger-tug was referring to. If so, he appears to be eligible THIS year. He's a 2-year kid and a stud. We shall see.

Mack and Weems because of the SEC standards? Shocking...

ROSE will complete the class 02-13-banana
There'd be plenty of minutes. He'd be the only natural 3 on the team.
Mack and Weems out of nowhere? Man, if Weems comes, we will be better than last year, and I can't believe I just said that--but it's true.
I take you guys' point about his being a true SF, and agree with that. My concern was that there's getting to be pretty big accumulation of players needing time at the 2-3 spots--Anderson, Douglas-Roberts, Mack, Willis. But that's why Cal gets the big bucks, I guess.

Grice got a lot of minutes at the 4 even though he was a natural 3. If we decide to go small we can trot out 4 ballhandlers the same way Villanova did. 4 ballhandlers plus Dorsey or Niles doesn't sound too bad to me.

It seems like very few minutes at those positions but it really isn't when you consider that we lost 64 minutes a game (Carney 27, DWash 27, Shawne 10) at the 2/3. We're adding 3 players so if the other players' minutes are maintained the 3 newcomers will still get at least 15 minutes a game if they earn them.

The bottom line is that every single player is accountable for every single second that they're on the court. That makes for some high intensity basketball.
I was a little worried about leaving 2 scholarships open this year... boy are they coming in handy.

It would be a total win-win situation.

Are these our 12 committed scholarships for this year, so there would be an open one for Weems?

Mack
Willis
Kemp
Niles
Bailey
Taggart
A. Anderson
CDR
Dozier
Cooper
Dorsey
Thierro
First Mack and now maybe Weems as unexpected gifts to the program. Coach Cal's ability to keep the Tigers in the mix for consideration by highly rated players continues to amaze me.

That is correct. And this is a final four type team:

A. Allen
A. Anderson
CDR
Weems
Dozier
Cooper
Dorsey
Mack
Willis
Kemp
Niles
Bailey
Taggart (sitting out/transfer)

Stammers is right, Weems really would be the missing piece of the puzzle.

IF he can play. Many don't make the adjustment from Juco and most that do take a couple of years. Grice and Massie are prime examples of this. The good news is that if he isn't up to the task this year we do have others that can do the job, and if he can give us 15-20 quality minutes a game that should be plenty.
Everyone, start praying for failure! Take one step back in order to take a giant leap forward!

I LOVE TIGER BASKETBALL! 04-rock 04-rock 04-rock

A great time to be a Tiger Fan, and to think that it can only get better if we're able to nail Rose and Randolph?!

OMG!
