Four questions with Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen, whose team plays at Florida State on Saturday.

What changes have you seen in FSU quarterback Chris Rix since last year from studying tape of the Seminoles' win against North Carolina?

They look like they're making some calls for him from the sideline, very much like Wake Forest or West Virginia or Clemson do, maybe helping him out there some. ... He still has the dimension of running the football, which is dangerous, to me. He's really a great athlete and he can run so very well.

You've had a reputation as a great play-caller. What factors go into successful play-calling?

The first one is your preparation and how well you've game-planned against tendencies. One of the things we try to do with our play calling is anticipate. We look at their defensive scheme and our offensive tendencies and then try to predict what they would play against our tendencies and come up with the best play.

How do you get your players to believe they can beat Florida State when it's something Maryland has never done before?

The fact that North Carolina State has beaten them and we've beaten North Carolina State. If you want to play that game you can go that route. I think our team has a lot of belief in itself, even after [losing to Northern Illinois] last week. ... I keep preaching to them it's about heart, it's about determination, it's about perseverance. Go down there and expect to win. We know it's a tough

Go down there and expect to win. We know it's a tough situation, but I've never played in a game where I didn't expect to win and I expect our players to think the same way.

Bobby Bowden said this might be his fastest team at Florida State. What is your reaction to that comment?

I agree, very much so. They've always been very, very fast to me. To me, every time I play Florida State it reminds me of being back in the NFL. That's the type of speed they have. I would concur with him. They have a lot of kids who can run. I wholeheartedly agree with him.
