I just said a few days ago to my wife that the one thing that sucks about being an American is that you're doomed to work your life away. Our vacation packages are absolutely pathetic compared to other nations...and it really has a negative impact on our quality of life.

Hell, I've thought about taking a small pay cut to try to get a public sector job. At least I'd get all the federal holidays and more vacation time!

Vacation time is particularily pathetic in my line of work (engineering consulting).

I work in the finance arm of an engineering company. Yes, it is very pathetic since utlization is such a huge metric in those companies.
I'm curious, do you finance bridges and other structures? If so, how do you repossess them if the client can't pay?
working for the state isn't too bad. the pay sucks, but I get two vacation and one sick day a month.

Those are usually paid for by governments, they always pay.
Me and my wife are both going into education. The pay sucks, but summers off is great. 02-13-banana
I went to visit my causin last year in Germany and she wanted to know why i was only staying a week and not 2 or longer. i told her i wanted to keep my job, but I went for a week and half. thankfully i can earn bonus days as long as i don't miss more than 6 hrs sick time in 3 months
Another thing about some of those countries is that the unemployment rates are higher. If we get an umemployment rate higher than 5% we freak out. Over there (Europe) they'd kill to have an unemployment rate anywhere close to that. It also seems that they go on strike over there all the time. I remember when I went to Paris I couldn't go to the Louvre because the workers were on strike.
