Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, who has an extensive college background, interviewed Tuesday for the head coach job at Duke University, school and league sources confirmed for ESPN.com.
The school fired Carl Franks in mid-October and defensive coordinator Ted Roof has served as interim head coach since that time. Roof is a candidate for the job, as well, and the team has demonstrated improvement on his watch.
Another current NFL offensive coordinator, Marc Trestman of the Oakland Raiders, is said to be interested in the Duke vacancy. It is not known if Trestman has interviewed with Duke officials. Neither is it known what kind of timetable Duke is operating under or when they will make an offer to a candidate.
Jackson, 38, is in just his third NFL season. He joined the Redskins staff in 2001, under then-coach Marty Schottenheimer, was retained by Steve Spurrier, and then elevated to the coordinator spot late last season. Jackson has called the plays in some games this year, although Spurrier reclaimed that responsibility last week.
In 14 seasons at the college level, Jackson has served on staffs at Pacific (1987-89), Cal State-Fullerton (1990), Arizona State (1992-95), the University of California (1996) and Southern California (1997-2000).
