MEBANE, N.C. -- A North Carolina basketball recruit and the state's all-time leading scorer was arrested Wednesday on drug charges, Alamance County officials said.
Eastern Alamance High School's JamesOn Curry was among 49 students arrested in a sweep of the county's high schools, sheriff's office spokesman Randy Jones said.
Curry is charged with two counts each of possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana; two counts of sale and delivery of marijuana; and two counts of possession and selling and delivering a controlled substance on school grounds.
Becky Shoffner, a spokeswoman for the Alamance-Burlington School System, said the crackdown followed growing concerns among high school principals about the presence of drugs on school property.
A parent survey also found "an increased perception that drugs were an increasing problem on campus," Shoffner said.
Steve Kirschner, North Carolina's sports information director, did not immediately return calls requesting comment.
John Moon, Eastern Alamance's athletic director and basketball coach, could not be immediately reached for comment.
Curry scored 41 points in a 84-76 win against High Point Andrews in December to set the state's career scoring record. A two-time Associated Press All-State first-team pick, Curry set a state record earlier this season by hitting his 282nd career 3-pointer.
