Florida State pulled out to an eight run lead after three innings,
and held on for a 14-9 wild win over the Jacksonville Dolphins on blustery Sunday afternoon, in a game that featured twenty-three runs, twenty-eight hits, eight homeruns, and twelve pitchers.

Derrick Smith hit his team-leading third homerun of the season, a grandslam in the second inning, while Aaron Cheesman, Dennis Anderson, and Danny Wardell each hit their first homeruns of the year.

Hunter Jones (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, but
did surrender five runs on seven hits in five innings of work, including four homeruns. Jones did strike out six batters though, and only walked one. After getting out of a jam in the sixth inning, Kevin Lynch had trouble in the seventh and was pulled for Brian Schultz.  For the third time this season, Schultz did not allow any inherited runners to score, though three unearned run did score in the next inning. Rhett James closed out the final 1.1 frames for the Noles to preserve the win.

Back to back singles by Shane Robinson and Drew began the game for FSU in the first inning. After a fielder's choice moved the runners up and Smith drew a walk to load the bases Gibbs Chapman grounded into what should have been an inning-ending double play, but JU second baseman Sean McHugh's error allowed both Robinson and Drew to score, and gave the Seminoles a 2-0 lead.

An inning later, the FSU offense was back at it when Bryan Zech hit  his first of three singles on the day, and moved to second when Cheesman walked. After Robinson struck out looking, Drew singled in Zech to make it 3-0. A walk to Eddy Martinez-Esteve loaded the bases for Smith's grand slam that put the Noles up 7-0. The Dolphins managed to get one run back in the bottom of the inning when third baseman Orlando Diaz homered off of Jones.

Florida State picked up two more runs in the third inning when
Zech walked and scored on Cheesman's second career homerun that  made it 9-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jacksonville cut the Seminole lead to
9-3when Jones gave up his second homerun of the game to first baseman Gordy Gronkowski.

The Dolphins pulled to within four runs in the bottom of the fifth when designated hitter Clint Hart and McHugh both hit solo homeruns to make it a 9-5 ballgame.

Wardell got a run back for the Noles in the top of the seventh off
of Wardell's solo shot, but JU got it back in the bottom of the inning when a McHugh single scored a run off of Lynch. With runners on second and third with no outs, Schultz was called on to put a stop to the Dolphin rally. The freshman struck out the first two batters he faced and had thrown strike two to the next batter before Cheesman gunned down Hart who was attempting to steal third base.

With two outs in the eighth inning, Matt Sauls drew a walk and Zech singled before a single up the middle by Cheesman scored them both, and gave FSU a 12-6 lead. JU cut that lead in half with three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to errors by Schultz and Drew. In five games, Drew has now made five errors.

Florida State extended their lead in the top of the ninth when
Drew walked, moved to second on a groundball, to third on a balk, and scored on a wild pitch. Anderson then hit a solo homerun to left, wowing his hometown fans, and capped the scoring at 14-9 before James struck out the side in the bottom of the inning.

The Seminoles improved to 3-3 on the season while Jacksonville fell to 2-1. The same two teams play again on Monday in Tallahassee at 3:30, with Eddie Cannon (1-0, 2.57 ERA) on the mound for the Noles against Brett Nagy (0-0 9.64) for the Dolphins.
