Bulldogs take a bite out of the Noles
by Drew Hankin
Bulldog pitcher Steven Cook and the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs shut down and beat the Seminoles 2-1 on Friday afternoon in the series opener at Dick Howser Stadium. Cook threw a complete game against FSU, allowing no earned runs and only four hits. Errors by three of the four starting infielders didn't help matters either, as Ryne Malone, Gibbs Chapman, and Stephen Drew each had one. Chapman and Drew's happened back to back in the top of the seventh inning, and combined for the eventual winning
run.
Seminole starting pitcher Hunter Jones (1-1) did his part for FSU, going seven innings, allowing only one earned run on just three hits, but took the loss for the toothless Noles. Rhett James also got two inning of effective relief in, but without any offense, it was all for naught.
Florida State scored their only run of the game in the third inning when Shane Robinson hit a one-out double to right-center, and scored on an error on UNCA first baseman Steve Sherman.
Two innings later, the Bulldogs tied it up when third baseman Steve Burnich walked, stole second, and scored on a double by center fielder Ben Padgett.
The death knell for the Seminoles came in the top of the seventh when right fielder Charles Pippitt singled, moved to second on an error by Chapman, and scored on Drew's error to give UNC-Asheville a 2-1 lead.
FSU went on to leave four runners on base in the remaining three
innings.
FSU snapped their five-game winning streak and fell to 7-4 on the season while UNCA improved to 3-3. The same two teams play on Saturday at 2:00 with Eddie Cannon (3-0, 2.29 ERA) on the mound for the Noles against Aaron Rembert (1-1, 2.61 ERA) for the Bulldogs.

Seminoles blank UNC-Asheville
by Drew Hankin
The Florida State Seminoles got superb pitching from Eddie Cannon and multi-hit games from three players in an 8-0 shutout win over the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs in front of 3,036 fans at Dick Howser Stadium on Saturday afternoon. After a 2-1 loss on Friday, it look as if game two was going to be another low-scoring pitcher's duel until the Noles finally broke the game open with a four-spot in the eighth inning.
Cannon (4-0) won his fourth consecutive game, going eight innings, giving no runs on only four hits while striking out seven batters without walking any. Matt DiBlasi got an inning of relief work in to
close out the game.
The Noles were led offensively by Stephen Drew with three singles and a double, Eddy Martinez-Esteve with a single, a double, and a homerun, and Aaron Cheesman with a double, a triple, and two walks.
After two scoreless innings to start the game, the Seminoles picked up their first run in the bottom of the third when Gibbs Chapman doubled to right and scored on Drew's first of four hits on the day, a single up the middle. Drew was then thrown out trying to steal second which was costly, as Martinez-Esteve then followed with a double to center.
Three innings later, Brant Peacher reached on an error when UNCA right fielder Charles Pippitt dropped what should have been an easy out. Danny Wardell then singled to put runners on the corners, and Bryan Zech drew a walk which should have loaded the bases, but Bulldog catcher J.K. Whited mistakenly threw to second base, thinking Wardell was stealing, and the alert Peacher easily stole home. Cheesman then walked to load the bases. After a double play that saw Wardell out at the plate and Matt Sauls out at first, Zech scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Seminoles a 3-0 lead.
FSU picked up their fourth run in the bottom of the seventh Dennis Anderson walked, moved to third on Drew's third hit of the game, and scored on a balk by UNCA pitcher Chris Nigro.
The big eight inning for the Noles began with a walk to Cheesman who then scored on a double down the left field line by Shane Robinson. After a pitching change, Drew then doubled Robinson in before Eddy Martinez-Esteve homered to right to give FSU a 8-0 lead.
Florida State improved to 8-4 on the season while the Bulldogs fell to 3-4. FSU and UNCA conclude the series on Sunday at 1:00 with Mark Sauls (0-1, 4.85 ERA) on the mound for the Seminoles.

FSU takes the series with a 4-1 win
by Drew Hankin
Florida State took the series with UNCA on Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 win in front of 2,548 fans at Dick Howser Stadium. The Noles got solid starting pitching from Mark Sauls, brilliant relief from freshman Brian Schultz, and three more hits from Aaron Cheesman who had a fantastic series, hitting .600 with two doubles, a triple, and two walks.
The Seminole bats started out slow once again, but managed to produce a run in the bottom of the third inning when Stephen Drew walked with two outs, stole second, and scored on Eddy Martinez-Esteve's double down the right field line, his third of the season.
Three innings later, the Bulldogs tied it up when center fielder Ben Padgett reached on an infield single, moved to second on a walk to second baseman David Williams, and scored a single to center by right fielder Matt Roberts. With two on and no out, FSU turned to Schultz to get the Noles out of trouble and keep the damage down. Schultz delivered for the third time this season, getting the first batter he faced on a sacrifice bunt, the second with an excellent diving catch on a popped up bunt, and the third on a weak grounder to first base.
Cheesman led off the bottom of the seventh frame with a single through the right side, moved to second when Matt Sauls drew a walk, and third when UNCA loaded the bases by hitting Shane Robinson with a pitch. Gibbs Chapman then delivered the big hit, a two-run single to right field that gave FSU a 3-1 lead. After walk to Drew, a sacrifice fly by Martinez-Esteve brought Robinson home to score the final run and made it a 4-1 game.
Kevin Lynch pitched the eighth inning, and Tyler Chambliss earned the first save of his career in the bottom of the ninth.
The Noles improved to 9-4 on the season while UNCA went home with a 3-5 record.
FSU travels next to Minnesota for the Dairy Queen Classic at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The Seminoles will face Nebraska at 1:15 eastern time on Friday, West Virginia on Saturday at 1:05, and Minnesota on Sunday at 4:05.
