"Yes, Minnesota freshman Kris Humphries has had quite a freshman season. The one-time Duke signee enters the final game of the regular season with a chance to become the first freshman to ever lead the league in both scoring and rebounding. Freshmen have previously led the Big Ten in scoring (former Ohio State guard Michael Redd was the most recent in 1998) and former Michigan Fab Five member Chris Webber lead the league in rebounds as a freshman in 1992."

This kid average 22 points and 10 rebounds....ouch!

I can't even imagine how good Duke would have been if Coach K would have pulled his ego out of his a$$ long enough to stop this kid from leaving. Did I mention that he was an honors student too? Big mistake....now you are stuck with Shav!
There are claims from some of the more obtuse Duke fans that he would have been a liability because he does not have many assists. Go figure..

That's funny. I'm sure Williams is lighting up the league with all of his assists.

WTF are you talking about? What good is a kid on your team if he would rather be playing for someone else? Do you think he would be putting up these numbers if he half-assed it at Duke and was pissed that he wasn't playing elsewhere? Duke released him from his agreement because he wanted to play elsewhere. If they had forced him to come, do you think he would have stayed? No, he would have transfered out ASAP. This has nothing to do with K's ego.
i have a simple question. Who has more championships, Gary Williams or Coach K.

You're a moron. If you knew anything at all about what you are talking about, you might have something to say. This kid wanted to go to Duke. Coach K said that his a$$ would be riding the pine no matter if this kid deserved to play or not. Humpries knew he was good enough to earn time and obviously was. Coach K's ego before even letting him practice settled things before he ever had a chance.

Wow 2 to 1. Great stat! Why don't you ask me that question after Gary Williiams has put in as many years as Coach K? That might shut you up!

1991, 1992, 2000

that would be 3.

We're both sorta wrong and both sorta right. Humphries did not give an official statement as to the reasons for not attending Duke.

Quote:Speculation has swirled that Humphries wanted more of a guarantee of immediate playing time to help him get to the NBA sooner, while Stahl speculated that Humphries might be looking for a system that would allow him to play more on the perimeter.

But so far, Humphries and his family haven't been willing to talk about it. The only thing stated on the record so far came from humphries' father, who told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that his son simply wanted to play closer to home.

So its probably a combination of PT and playing closer to home. If anything, its probably his father's ego because he wanted his son to "follow in his footsteps" to Minnesota. But if you play for K and bust your ***, you will get PT. Sean Dockery proved this to K and got a couple of starts this season, and now gets a ton of minutes.
remind me the year maryland won the acc tournament with gary at the helm?

kaiser, the more I think about it, the more I doubt you are this "huge" fan that you say you are...

You are right DT. All the other figure were pulled straight from the archives. I thought UMD won one but thay didn't. They have won the Carolina Tourney twice but not under GW. I stand corrected.

Well I will agree with you on that. It was rumored that Humphries wanted immediate playing time to make a quicker transition to the pros. I know GW wouldn't have really wanted a kid like that either. I think what happened was Coach K knew this kid would be 1-2 and done and decided that giving him a guarantee would have jeopardized Duke's future team. The flip side to that though is that Deng is short for the college ranks as well. Why does Coach K accept Deng and turn away Humpries? Doesn't seem to make sense.

Dockery has erned playing time..this is true. The problem is he is not a freshman. It is widely known that Coach K rarely (Deng and JJ the aside) starts his freshman. He is smart enough to know that getting star players like JJ, Deng, and Humpries in the media spotlight will only shorten their college careers. Minnesota is not a program that has the luxury of keeping a kid like Humpries on the bench.
Kaiser...

Please stop embarrassing yourself pretending you know what you are talking about regarding this situation.

I have knowledge that no one on this thread has, especially you.

Kris wanted to come to Duke, but he wanted to start every game, he wanted 35 MPG, and didn't want to have summer workouts in Durham. He wanted to stay in Minnesota and work out with the Timberwolves. Coach K does not promise anyone anything and he told Kris that if he was expecting to play 35 MPG without earning it, or not working out with the team during a crucial bonding time, then he has no business at Duke. He did the right thing (K).

Humphries is averaging 4 million points and 3 million rebounds, but what is his team doing? Kris Humphries only gives a damn about one success: his own. His team has talent, including Adam Boone, but they SUCK. Kris is a ball hog and ruins team chemistry.

There are certain players that Duke didn't get who I wish we had gotten (David Lee, Jared Jeffries etc...) but this one I am glad we got rid of.

You are such a self promoting jack-a$$. You could talk your way out of anything. I'm sure Duke would have turned down Michael Jordan, Chris Webber, Allen Iverson, and Ray Allen too.

All your bull-sh*t makes me sick. I'm sure that if Coach K is the supreme coach that he is could have coached Humphries just as well as he did any other top recruit that has passed through those doors. Spare me and the rest of the board with your "I have connections" crap. I am so tired of hearing about it. It does nothing for your credibility and just makes you look like a pompous idiot. If you had all these connections, what the hell are you doing here? Are you the voice of reason or just a psychic for the spirit of the great Coach K. Give me a break already.

ps. please pass this on to Coach K.
Honestly, I would love to see you go down this path... Damascus did it once, called me out and I PMed him some proof and it shut him up about anything on this subject.

PLEASE challenge my credibility on this sort of topic.

OK...tag your it. What you don't understand is that unless you are sitting on the Duke bench or have any input what so ever into the daily practices of the Duke basketball program, I could care less what you think you have to say. You know me, if you give me something that is inpressive that displays your input and superior knowledge of Duke basketball I will come on this board and officially say so. Until then you are just a blow hard!
