Seminoles Defeat the Redbirds 6-3
by Drew Hankin

FSU downed the Illinois State Redbirds 6-3 on Tuesday night after a lengthy mid-inning rain delay.  With a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning, Ryne Malone singled in the eventual game-winning run in Bryan Zech.  An inning later, the Noles picked up a couple of insurance runs to seal the win.

DiCarlo Thompson started his first career game for the Noles and pitched fairly well, allowing two runs on just three hits in 3.2 innings before ending his night when the rains came.  Brian Schultz (2-0) picked up his second win in less than a week with four stellar innings of relief, allowing an unearned run on only one hit while walking two batters and striking out five.  Kevin Lynch earned his second win of the season with 1.1 innings to close out the game.

The Redbirds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Thompson walked ISU centerfielder Nate Whitney, and then gave up a two-run homerun to second baseman Jay Molina.

The Noles cut the Illinois State lead in half in the bottom of the third inning when Zech singled to center, moved to second on a sacrifice by Stephen Drew, and scored on a single by Eddy Martinez-Esteve.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Martinez-Esteve led off with a single and advanced to single on a sacrifice by Aaron Cheesman.  After Malone was hit by a pitch, Derrick Smith flew out to deep centerfield to allow Martinez-Esteve to go to third.  A single by Shane Robinsonn brought home Martinez-Esteve, and another one by Gibbs Chapman scored Malone to give the Noles a 3-2 lead.

An inning later, ISU tied the game up when Whitney reached on an error by Drew, moved to third on one of Chapman's three errors in the game, and scored the unearned run on a wild pitch by Schultz.

FSU came back and took the lead in the bottom of the inning when Zech singled, moved to second on a throwing error by Molina, went to third on a groundball hit by Cheesman, and scored on a single by Malone that made a 4-3 game.

Smith led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Brandon Manasa.  Robinson then singled Manasa over to second before an error by third baseman Chris Shephard allowed both runners to move up.  After a pitching change, Chapman picked up his second and third RBIs with a single to centerfield, and gave FSU a 6-3 lead.

FSU improved to 12-5 on the season while the Redbirds fell to 3-3.  The Noles play again on Wednesday evening at 6:00 against the Butler Bulldogs, with Brian Chambers making his first career start for Florida State.
