FSU finally gets a laugher
by Drew Hankin

The Noles finally got to empty the bench and the bullpen for the first time season, in an easy 11-2 win over the Butler Bulldogs on Wednesday night. FSU used every available position player, and six pitchers in the blowout win over error-prone Butler.

Brian Chambers (1-0) started his first career game for the Seminoles and got the win, going four innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five batters.  Matt DiBlasi, Hunter Davis, Frank Radziwon, Rhett James, and Tyler Chambliss each saw an inning of work and combined for five scoreless innings.  In all, the FSU pitching staff combined for fifteen strikeouts.

FSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Bryan Zech got on base when Bulldog third baseman Dale Mueller threw the ball away and moved all the way over to third before scoring on Aaron Cheesman's second triple of the season.

The Seminoles poured it on with four runs in the second inning which began when Shane Robinson reached on a bunt single and went to second on an pickoff throw by Butler starter Randy Miles that went past the first baseman.  Robinson then stole third and scored on a single to right by Ryne Malone that went right by Bulldog right fielder Jason Combs for Butler's third error of the game to that allowed Malone to go to second.  After Matt Sauls reached on an infield single and moved Malone to third, Zech hit a sacrifice fly to bring home FSU's third run of the game.  Stephen Drew then reached on a bunt single before Eddy Martinez-Esteve hit his team-leading fifth homerun of the season which put the Noles up 5-0.

Gibbs Chapman led off the next inning and got on base via Butler's fourth error, went to second on a wild pitch, to third on a passed ball, and scored on a single to left by Robinson. Robinsons then moved to second on a ground ball, and scored on a double by Matt Sauls that made it 7-0.

Butler got their only two runs of the game in the top of the fourth inning when designated hitter Justin McKinley and catcher Andy Bulla hit back-to-back singles, and both scored on a single off the screen in right by second baseman Clayton Deeb that cut the Seminole lead to 7-2.

The Noles got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when Martinez-Esteve singled up the middle, moved to third on a single by Cheesman, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chapman.

After a scoreless fifth, FSU picked up another run in the bottom of the sixth when Sauls picked his third hit of the game with a single through the left side, stole second, went to third on a throwing error by Deeb, and scored on a Zech single to left.

Florida State scored their final two runs of the game in the next inning which began with back-to-back walks to Louis Rojas and Danny Wardell.  Malone then singled down the right field line to bring home Rojas, and Wardell came home on a sacrifice fly hit by Brant Peacher to make it 11-2 in favor of the Seminoles.

The Noles improved to 13-5 on the season while Butler fell to 3-4. FSU now has a day off before hosting the Michigan State Spartans this weekend.  Game times are 3:30 on Friday, 7:00 on Saturday, and 1:00 on Sunday.
