Florida State routs the Spartans
by Drew Hankin

#19 Florida State decimated the Michigan State Spartans 11-1 on Saturday night in front of 3,161 fans at Dick Howser Stadium.  Matt Sauls led the offense with three hits, and three other Seminoles had multi-hit games.  Four FSU pitchers combined to only give up one run on six hits while striking out fifteen batters without issuing any walks.

Eddie Cannon (5-1) earned the win in six innings of work and gave up the only run of the night.  He also struck out nine batters.  Matt DiBlasi, Frank Radziwon, and Tyler chambliss all pitched an inning of relief.

Florida State wasted no time getting the offense going in the bottom of the first when Bryan Zech led off with an infield single and moved to second when Gibbs Chapman walked.  After both runners moved up on a passed ball, Eddy Martinez-Esteve walked to load the bases with no outs.  Aaron Cheesman then extended his hitting streak to thirteen games with a two-run double down the right field line to give FSU a 2-0 lead.

An inning later, Brant Peacher and Matt Sauls both reached on walks and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Dennis Anderson.  After a sacrifice fly by Zech that scored Peacher and a walk to Chapman, Sauls came home on a single to right by Martinez-Esteve.  Chapman then scored on a wild pitch that made a 5-0 game.

Michigan State's sole run of the game came in the top of the third when third baseman Matt Moreno homered off of Cannon.

Friday's hero, Danny Wardell led off the bottom of the third inning with a double to right-center, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Peacher before scoring on a bunt single by Sauls.  Sauls then stole second and third, before scoring on a throwing error by MSU catcher Sean Walker.

In the fourth, Shane Robinson and Wardell were both hit by pitches before Peacher singled in Robinson.  Sauls then hit an infield single to score Wardell to make the score 9-1.  After Anderson was hit by another pitch to advance Sauls to second, Zech singled to plate Sauls for the final run of the inning.

After a scoreless fifth, the Seminoles scored the final run of the game in the sixth inning when Peacher singled to right, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on the third single of the day by Sauls.

DiBlasi and Radziwon pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings before Chambliss ended the game by striking out the side on nine pitches.

Florida State improved to 15-5 on the season while Michigan State fell to 4-6.  The Seminoles will go for the series-sweep on Sunday at 1:00 with Matt Sauls (0-1 4.03) on the hill for FSU.
