If we bring in Malouf, Walker and Calhoun we will have had a good year and filled some needs. Memphis has a very good shot at all three.

Disagree on Govan and Longstreet. They had several offers
else where, including some cartel schools.

These are two of the 4 linebackers Helton said he wanted back
in September.

What are the qualifications of a...... "home run hitter".
Being out West now, I don't have any firsthand knowledge of what's going on with University of Memphis football recruiting anymore; so I have to depend the The Commercial Appeal website and what you guys write.

From what I've read on this site, the Tigers have something like 17 scholarships to offer, with 6 commits. Do Jada Brown, Corey Mills, and Dave Thomas III make it 9? Or do they count against last year's total?

It seems they have a decent shot at some talented players like Walker, Calhoun, Malouf, etc. And there may be a local player or two they're keeping under wraps until signing day.

Also, I like Coach West's regional recruiting philosophy: Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama the prime recruiting areas, with a few players coming from other states like Louisiana and Florida. There's plenty of talent in those four states. Washington State does the same thing out here: focus on states (Washington and California) where you have visibility and where there's plentiful talent.

Given the fact that he has to recruit against the entire SEC and other elite schools, Coach West is doing a good job. Like Rich Rodriquez of West Virginia, he seems to be very good at identifying and developing players.

Assuming all the guys listed above definitely sign with us, we'll need to definitely finish with a flourish. . .none of our commitments are considered game-changing players. Landing all or some combination of Malouf, Calhoun, Walker, Martez S., would go a long way in pulling our recruiting talent up.

There are some players that could fall to us because of a lack of scholarships at other BCS schools, such as LB Josh Johnson and RB Terry Grant. Those guys are leaning to other schools, but if those schools don't have an available scholarship at that position they might fall to us.

Do you know which school Grant is leaning to, and whether there is some chance they actually may not have a scholly for him? If we got him somehow, he might just be our biggest sign since D'Lo.

On paper, Weaver sounds like a good one too.

Supposedly he wanted to go to Fla State, but I think a lack of available scholarships steered him away. His coach indicated in an article a month ago that he was leaning toward Clemson or Southern Miss, but here lately Alabama has been added to the list.

So, in short, it sounds like it will be anyone's guess!

IMO - a Danny Wimprine, DeAngelo Williams, Maurice Avery kind of guy......I don't really look at the recruiting rankings per se because I know that TW is a good evaluator of talent, but it would be nice to see some guys top this class off that are highly-rated or known commodities.....I know Govan and Longstreet are very good gets......I would say, like most everyone else, that if this class rounded out with Malouf, Calhoun, and Walker it would be a very good class........

Can you really count Danny Wimprine and Mo Avery? Avery was highly recruited but nobody but us wanted him as a qb. Wimprine was not a very highly rated recruit.

Looking at Scout, looks like Alabama already has a running back signed from this class rated higher than Grant. Maybe he will consider that in choosing schools. Clemson has a recruit that they could sign that is also a higher rated RB than Grant. He would be tops at either Southern Miss or Memphis.

I can definitely count Avery - he was the surprise of signing day that year......if you want to sub out Wimprine, sub in a guy like John Doucette who no one thought we would get either.......not his fault the TE position is vastly underused in our system.........
Rip signed Danny.
Go ahead and add Malouf. He committed yesterday to MEMPHIS.

It's down to the final week; who knows how things will shake out over these final 8 days??

I was able to watch Matt Reagan twice when Farragut High played here at Oak Ridge and he is the real deal. He has a strong leg and I believe that with the special team coaching that he will get at UofM he will possiblly be as good as Gostkowski and he could be a game changing player.

sure he was.

Tulane recruited him as a Defensive Back.
;-)

in all seriousness, that goes to show you how much of a crapshoot recruiting is. Wimprine could have started for probably 90% of DI schools his last couple of years and nobody recruited him as a QB.

Robert Lane at Old Miss was a Parade All American High School QB and is a complete flop.

Sure it is. Recruiting is a crapshoot, just like a lot of things in life. However, your odds of hitting the jackpot with a kid are much higher if he is a premium prospect. If you're signing 10-15 top 100 prospects a year like the big boys, about a third of them will be absolutely studs, another third will be mediocre, and another third will either flunk out or transfer.

The Tigers don't have this luxury, so when they get a crack at a premium prospect (like a DeAngelo) we hope and pray that we hit on him. And in De-lo's case, we struck gold. The trick is to get a Williams or Wimprine, sign solid talent to complement them, and ride them for a couple of 7-8 win seasons.

Clemson wanted Danny as a QB, and Notre Dame as a DB.
